Yesterday we answered an ad in the weekly freebie paper for free dig your own raspberry bushes. We went and met this wonderful woman who has been gardening here for over 40 years. Her bushes were started from shoots from her mother's plants and have spread like crazy! She was having people come dig the bushes and shoots that had taken over the paths that used to go through the patch. She must have over 1000 bushes out there! We ended up with 16 plants and got them all in last night. Some are a little droopy this morning but we're hopeful that they will establish themselves and send out new shoots even if the existing ones don't make it. I've never grown raspberries before and I'm really excited that we were able to add them to our growing backyard food supply! |

Three years ago I ordered and planted blueberries, raspberries and blackberries. had a nice big spot in the back to have a berry patch. Then I read that you can't plant raspberries and black berries together. They need to be seperated by 500-600 feet. The black berries are doing great in the front yard. The raspberries are all over the place but don't produce much. Now I know why they are so expensive.

We also planted our first raspberies this year, what fun it is to go out in the yard and pick and eat right from the bush!
So far we only have gotten a handful of berries, but next year we are hoping for more

I did the same thing a few years ago. Don't give up on them...they will spread and flourish, it just takes a couple of years.

I hope at least a few these do well enough to eventually spread. We also planted blueberries, red currants, gooseberries and elderberries earlier this month. The first two are doing well, despite the ducks getting at them and getting all of this year's berries which were still very green. The gooseberries and elderberries were ordered as bare root and don't show any sign of life yet. Luckily they weren't expensive. I need to find a spot for a strawberry patch. Then when my apple trees start producing I will be a happy gardener! |

That is so cool! I tried putting raspberries in two years ago and it was a dismal failure, but I have friends with tons of them so we go and pick. :) You'll love having those in the future, I'm sure!
