Hey Ladies,
I am going out in the garden today..when it cools off. As some of you know I didnt my seeds planted to do seedlings so I am wondering if I can just put the seeds in the ground? I am going to do this with my cucs and melons which I have done before just from seeds. But I have never planted tomato's from seed..only seedlings..

I am taking yall's advice. My wonderful neighbor came yesterday and gave me 16 seedlings...I am going to plant them and I am going to plant some seed directly in the ground..I will keep everyone undated...Thanks again ladies

I would sure give it a try. It must be so nice to have the mild climate. But, I guess I would miss the four seasons. You always want what you don't have!

You never know unless you try! I planted some in the ground and they were by far the most hardy tomato plants I ever grew! Also they set fruit earlier and also had fruit longer into the season than my transplants. Maybe it's just my garden, not sure but I am growing some transplants and some direct seeded this year again to see if it was a random occurrence :)

Cherry tomato seeds can definitely be planted directly into the ground. I've planted other varieties of tomato seeds that way as well, but I always plant several seedlings for good measure.

I think the reason for not planting the seeds directly in the ground is that they need to be started early, at least up here in Michigan, in order to take advantage of the long days of midsummer, when they do most of their growth. The ground is too cold to germinate the seeds that early. Did you know you can root a cutting from tomato plants in a glass of water?

I have always planted my tomato seeds directly in the ground. I use a wall-of-water or other frost protection on each plant to keep them plenty warm and protected from elements until they are strong enough to stand on their own. Most years I get plenty of tomatoes. If you live in a shorter growing season area like I do, choose a variety that will mature within the duration of your gardening season.

I grew tomatoes from seeds I planted in the ground a few years ago--I was still getting cherry tomatoes in October. I say go for it. The most important thing is good soil and sun.

Lisa...thanks I did think about it and I think I am going to do 1 row just seeds and 1 row with the seedlings my neighbor gives me...

I'd stick some in the ground too Deborah. The 1st year my sis planted a garden she stuck hers right in the ground & had a bumper crop. I started mine inside & ended up with 10 times less. |

Thanks Marly, I am going to do that with my cucs...and okra. I was just told that I CAN NOT put tomato seeds directly in the ground....So My dear neighbor and best friend is going to give me some of her seedlings...

Deborah: My husband put some okra and cucumber seeds right in the ground. Some are coming up, some are not. Good luck. Keep us posted.
