Do you think if I just plucked the flower head off my dandelions they would eventually go away since they don't go to seed to replicate?

God bless,

Judy

We have made peace with ours too - also, the birds love them. We have seen several different types of sparrows in our yard and they're always going for the dandelion seeds. I was going to post a photo of a White Crown Sparrow eating dandelion seeds, but couldn't find it. :o{

We have decided to make friends with our dandelions because our new bee colony LOVES them! They are so happy zooming from one dandelion to another.

I like the dandelions. Going to try dandelion wine again this year. Too much sugar in the recipe last year. Tastes like moonshine! lol

Picking the flowers only prevents the spread of the dandelions. We use ours so to us they aren't a nuisance. The leaves are wonderful in salads (they're a bit bitter, so use sparingly) and we also feed them to our bunnies. We also use the flowers to make dandelion jelly.

You can try to dig them up by the roots, but getting the entire root is virtually impossible. We tried many times, and decided to make peace with the enemy.

We don't have that large of a front yard (and the dogs pretty much take care of anything living in the back yard) but I get one of those old sharp ended "digger" tools and dig them up by the root--unless you destroy the tap root, you'll have dandelions.

The best way to rid your yard of dandelions is to let the grass grow to a height that smothers the leaves, like 3 inches or so. That way, the plant can't get proper oxygen & dies down. We let our yard grow a good bit before hubby mowed this year, & our field looks fabulous
Here's a pic, & this is about 4 days since he mowed last. At the start of the season, we had quite a few dandelions, now only a few at most in that big field.

I pick mine like crazy for jelly each year but have a never ending supply. I think just missing one probably lets a zillion seeds go. Maybe my yard is just a perfect dandelion growing environment!
