Posted - Mar 30 2005 : 07:34:40 AM It is that time of the year! In the past I've only used egg shells and coffee grounds, I'm now ready for full fledged (or at least almost full fledged) composting. I've ready many different articles. What are some things that have worked for you? Is there a simple compost box I can make with scraps I've can find around the ranch, such as wood, screen, etc? We have had some snow this week, so don't know if I should plant my seeds this weekend. Any other gardeners in Whitman County? Have you done any planting yet? I know the farmers for the most part of seeded, but I look at my garden alittle differently then their barley crops!
Well off to the office and counting my days down until I'm at the farm!
Bless, Suzy

Posted - Mar 31 2005 : 06:45:10 AM Thanks for all the great ideas. I'm going to give our extension office a call today to see if they're offering any classes or have info. I'll have fun this weekend building my compost 'bin'.

Posted - Mar 31 2005 : 02:47:55 AM I cold compost in large piles (slow) and use an Earth Machine and pallet bins for hot composting (fast). You can build an efficient system with five pallets. |_|_|. It's not pretty but it works.

Posted - Mar 30 2005 : 4:45:02 PM One of our county recycling centers just gave a talk on composting and worm-bin composting at our local library. They even had compost bins and worm bins available at very reduced rates. Maybe check with your local extention office and get some info there? Good luck. Sharon |

Posted - Mar 30 2005 : 3:43:53 PM There are lots of ways to do composting from creating a rolling composter out of a 55 gallon drum to a screen cage. Lots of books out there with ideas. Organic gardening has lots of patterns available but my all time favorite way to compost is by vermiculture. I got a book from the library called "The Worm Book" used their pattern for the box, got my first worms from Yelm Earthworms and castings by mail and have a wonderful composte digesting machine that creates black gold and worm tea that is wonderful fungisideand disease controll on all of my plants.
