What are you planting this fall? We have mustards, collards, turnips, & garlic. We tried our hand at pumpkins and winter squash but with the dry weather I couldn't afford to water the garden and the animals.

My garlic didn't QUITE flower - but now, after reading your post, I wish it had!!! Garlic tea?!?!? It sounds so interesting....especially the non-smelly part!

Does anyone know if lettuce will do well in zone 3 in the fall? I ahve never tried it....
Libbie, did your garlic flower? save those beautiful heads, they dry nicely and can be used in all sortf of arrangements. My friend uses the flower heads in tea...i know! GARLIC TEA, but her body odor doesn't smell badly and she doesn't even use deoderant because that is the effect of the garlic when you are exposed long term to it.

This fall I am planting garlic and shallots - as well as a bunch of flower bulbs. I had such disappointing luck with my garlic this year - okay, well, it wasn't really luck, it was that I had a 2-day-old baby right when it needed to be harvested and I just didn't get around to it until WAY too late....
Are there any other veggies, etc. that you all plant in the fall to come up in the spring aside from the allium/onion family?

We had such heat this summer that I didn't get my usual second plantings in so I am limited to broccoli, spinach and maybe an extremely good crop of leeks. Since Labor Day, the weather has taken a cooler than usual turn and I think it might just be here for good.
I will continue to harvest my carrots,onions, potatoes and the last of the tomatoes but I was just not up to the heat this year and was less industrious than usual. The pumpkins turned color late August so I have been trying to salvage them as well. Is it me or does everything seem about a month ahead of usual? (Atleast here on the East Coast...)

We have beans squash spinach lettuce collards arugala radishes carrots beets swiss chard, broccoli kale cilantro and dill. And will later plant garlic and shallots. We still have tomatoes okra yard long beans coming and the shiitake Mushrooms are starting to come in.

Yes! I'm afriad I may be wasting my time with the greens since there is no sight of rain but I love them so much I will sacrifice a few extra dollars to try to keep them watered. I had to water my summer garden a lot but the yeild was excellent and we have lots of veggies to last us through the winter.
Bridge, I've found growing garlic is rather easy. I've tried my hand at horseradish but failed. I think I may try that again if i can get my hands on some.

Hi Nicole...it would be so much easier if we could forecast the weather, wouldn't it. You're growing season is obviously way different than here, but I pretty much just replant the entire garden and see what happens...usually it works, sometimes it doesn't. But really, all I've done is spent a little on seeds and an enjoyable afternoon (or two or three) in the garden. We gardeners tend to be a real optimistic lot..

I have planted some late lettuce & spinich. You just reminded me that I wanted to try my talent at Garlic!!
Ok I have added that to my weekly to-do list!!
Does anyone grow spinich or other greens in a cold-frame thru winter? I have been thinking of trying that!
