I picked up a lightweight jacket/shirt that zips up the front with 100 SPF and 55 UPF for gardening at our box store, Costco.
Do any of you ladies use something of this sort?
My dad died from complications of skin cancer,so I am pretty careful about sunscreen. Even so, I have acquired a lot of "freckles" all over my back, through my clothing, while gardening. I am a pretty avid gardener.
I sleep in sunscreen - seriously, I wear it 24/7. So I hope this is as helpful as it sounds. The shirt was $38. Expensive for a gardening shirt, but a value for an SPF garment.
What are your thoughts?

don't forget the backs of your hands either!!
I look at my mother's hands and see the effects of years as a child spent at the swimming pool. Age spots...not many but they'll creep up eventually.
So I too slather it on the backs of my hands and also work outside every single day!
I spent time in the desert and will probably pay for it later. My back has spots on it already.
And I've had that basil cell carcinoma removed off my nose about 5 years ago. Melanoma is the silent killer, so every ounce of prevention will help!!

I am in New Mexico and we are on a certain curvature of the earth that gets more uv rays + I live at 7800 ft. altitude. I really should be more careful. Even when it snows we get it from the reflection off the snow. And we get a lot of snow. I try not to go out without sunscreen on my face but I could stand to be more careful about my head and my shoulders. I train horses and there are very few sunscreens that don't melt down into my eyes and sting when I am working. So I mostly wear sunscreen makeup without a lot of oil. Folks rib me about having to put on my makeup to go out and see my horses. But there are a lot of solar storms going on this year and I can tell a big difference in the brightness of the sun on those days. I don't care what the newsguy says. I believe we had better take some precautions.I think I will wear the back of my hair down this year. I usually wear it in a braid to the side and my neck gets so burned.

Pretty much, if you can see sunlight through the fabric, UV and UVA light is getting through.
A broad brimmed hat is the best. Take example from the migrant workers. They don't mess around.
For sunscreen, anything higher than 40 is a waste so long as it has that zinc that blocks the sun's UVA and UVB.

My gardening hat has SPF protection for my head. Found it at a local gardening center. Not sure if it does any good.

We all must choose our own "poisons," but not having to use as much sunscreen is why the 100 SPF rating on the shirt is so exciting. My intention was not to get into a passionate debate on the use of sunscreen, but to answer your question of if I had ever gotten sunburned under my clothes. Also, in the Pacific NW our sunshine hours in the summer run from about 4 am to almost 10pm, so I do sleep in the sun sometimes! LOL

BTW, I would not sleep in sun screen unless you are sleeping in the sun...it actually has chemicals that can also cause cancer of it's own. I wear big brimmed hats and cover up though to go in the sun. I'm a diabetic and insulin causes me to be real sensitive to the sun (I get a rash and such). So that's why I just cover up really well. I don't like to put more cancer causing chemicals on me on top of that.

wow I've never had that happen under my clothes. But, I have read that ALL clothes have a spf factor. I also have severe scholiosis, so never go with out covering up (would scare most people with all the long scars, and the metal that pokes out back there). I have a lot of cancer in my family so I always cover up, but shamefully truth be told I don't go out in the sun that much period.

Actually Heather you do get a lot of sun exposure through your clothes. As I mentioned I have freckles and sun damage all over my back. I am very sensitive about how my back looks - I have scoliosis and I NEVER go without my back being covered. So the only way I could get sun exposure is THROUGH my clothes. And I do wear sunscreen on all my skin not just exposed skin. I know it is over kill - plus I am brown-eyed, brown-haired with plenty of pigment in my skin. However, my father died from skin cancer, so I try to be very careful. I hope you will, too.

actually all clothes protect you from the sun the new spf stuff is kind of a money making thing-have you ever got sunburned under any of your clothes?

That does sound like a good bargain. I've been using my worn out old dress shirts as an outer layer when gardening but maybe it's time to move up to something more serious. |

Marianne, I was just looking up clothes like that and they are so expensive. My mom has had lots of skin cancer lately. ANd I have had several spots on my arms and face burned off too. I am in the sun alot. So I was thinking I should get a shirt to wear outside plus a hat. I hate being too hot and thought these would be lightweight enough. I will go look at Costco now. Thanks for the tip. I am so sorry about your dad. This is really a serious disease and most people don't realize it. As hot as the sun is now we need to be more careful.
