Here are the Potato boxes DH and I built. I built the two in front and DH the other one. This is a new method of growing potatoes for me so I'm looking forward to trying it. We used all reclaimed wood. Funny how telling a few neighbors we were looking for wood how many people came out of the woodwork offering us wood from past projects and such. We have no problem hauling it and they appreciate having their garage cleared out. :)

Here is more info on the boxes:

Very interesting!

I plant potatoes in cardboard produce boxes and I bury the plant about 16-18 inches and I get a pretty good harvest from each box. I like doing this because I can place the boxes on a grassy area that I want to turn into a planting area and by the end of the season the gras is dead and the box can be grabbed and given a shake to harvest the taters.

I have found out after much research that burying the greens as they grow will not produce more potatoes. Most only grow in about the bottom 14 inches of soil they are planted in. I also have large bins that i tried to burry mine last year and did end up with only potatoes in the bottom 10". I have read tho there are certain ones that may grow more as you bury. So if you want to save yourself alot of work dont bury them very deep!

DH and I just made 2 potato boxes yesterday, am hoping to plant them tomorrow, if it is not too windy out. One will be baby reds and the other white ones. Got them side by side and will see which one will be the best growing in full sun.

I just saw some green potato bags that are round and sit on the ground. You fill, plant and you can either hang or sit. There's this little 'butt flap' where you can check on their growth.

Yes we have been collecting Palettes for an upcoming garden project. It's amazing if you Google search Palette furniture how many great designs there are for the garden and even a few for inside the house.

Thanks ladies. For the smaller fingerling potatoes the boxes are 2ft on all sides and for the bigger potatoes 3ft all sides. We have a friend who is supplying us with organic soil. I'm also starting a compost next week or maybe this weekend if I can fit it.

Missy! I love them!

You know, I just found an article online about "Potato condos" last week and printed it out for my husband. First he laughed hysterically, citing that now he had heard it all, but then he went right out and picked up some scrap wood for me and we're going to work on them this weekend! I can't wait to see how we do! You must be so excited, too! What type of soil mix are you planning to use inside? How big are the boxes (length x width)? H

Good luck! Can't wait to see how it all works out for you!

That's really neat! I'm going to show it to dh to see what he thinks. My potatoes didn't do so good last year.
