Posted - Mar 15 2012 : 5:40:04 PM I am pretty sure I have voles in my compost bin. Something was munching on an over-ripe pear yesterday, and today it's gone. Unless I have super amazing composting skills, I would have to assume it was eaten. I think it would be voles because of the quarter-sized holes I have on the outside of the bin. Would having a critters in my compost bin be beneficial or harmful?

Posted - Mar 18 2012 : 12:54:27 AM Teresa, I'm with you ... wish the little critters didn't find it so attractive. I was so excited when I got a tumbler composter. No more fear of the squirying critters! Marianne |

Posted - Mar 16 2012 : 07:58:18 AM This helped me too, so thanks for posting. I have seen a little goffer in and out of the compost pile out by our shed. My DH is going to turn it over for me, because the idea of having it run at my feet is just a bit more than I can handle. They are cute, but can be mean, and I have very small feet, and if it bit my toe!!!! Lol. We need to get it outta here before my seedlings go into the garden anyway. Good thing DH wears steeltoes!
The tears I shed then, watered the flowers I harvest now.

Posted - Mar 15 2012 : 7:00:28 PM the only problem with having rodents in your compost is, they eat all the kitchen scraps you put in there, but other than incasing it in cement, its impossible to keep them out and since they are vegatarins, their manure won't hurt anything, plus they do mix it up for you...
