Has anyone used coffee grounds on their vegetable garden? I just read an article that says the grounds enrich the soil and keep moisture in the soil around the plants. They can also be sprinkled around plants to control pests such as snails, slugs, and ants. With all the discussions lately about favorite coffee and K-cups, I thought I would start recycling my K-cups. That got me to thinking that there must surely be a use for old coffee grounds. I've been dumping leaves and vegetable peelings onto my garden plot and am now adding in the coffee grounds.

I get FREE coffee grounds from my local Starbucks. They love giving it to gardeners. I put it into my compost.

Can you use flavored coffee? My husband will sometimes drink hazelnut flavored coffee. I haven't added to the compost because I wasn't sure if I could...

I add them around my blueberry bushes to add acidity.

One of those countertop composters is on my wishlist, too, Amy.

Glad to know that's where to put my coffee grounds, thanks.

Thanks all! My husband turned over the garden today and will work it again later, so I'll be adding in more of the peelings, egg shells and coffee grounds before he has a second go at it. Audrey, your Hobbs must have been a sweet boy. I know you miss him. Cairn terriers are so cute.

You bet! Filter and all go in the compost pile and tea bags too. I know acid loving plants love coffee grounds and you'd probably need to be careful if that was all you were putting in as compost but you should be good to go with grounds along with your peelings and leaves.

Audrey

Good boy Hobbs! I love and miss you.

I used this in the past (when we didn't live in the apt) Egg shells and coffee grounds are a really good compost item.

Have you seen the nice by-the-sink compost holders they are selling? They are really beautiful. All I had was a plastic one. LOL

And the local coffee shop put them out back for any one to take. I had 6 - 5 gallon buckets full including filters. Even Starbucks puts them out for anyone to take. All you have to do is ask and since we have a huge garden and it needs a lot of loving I'm grabbing up whatever I can find.

I have been using coffee grounds as well as banana peels & crushed egg shells around my roses for almost 10 years.... a great way to organiclly give nutrients to the roses.... I also dump my coffee grounds in my compost as well as sprinkle around plants in my garden.
My hubby works in a small 4 man office so he has the guys dump the coffee grounds from their coffee pot into a large contain which he brings home at the end of the week... In the summer i hit up Starbucks and some of our other local coffee estb. and they give me their daily grounds... I call our Starbucks in the morning so they know I am coming and they have it ready for me when I come by later in the afternon for my late day Java fix! lol!
We have a lot of little drive-thru 'coffee huts' out here and there are 2 that, if you bring a 5gal bucket.... they will fill it up and then when it is full they put it outside... there are several of us who do that,,, we have our names on our buckets....so we know whose is whose... one of the perks of living in a very small town.

I have a big cold frame that the chickens have been mulching up for me. I throw all my scraps and coffee grounds in there and they tear it all up for me. It's all rich black soil now. It's good stuff.

Hi Bella, yes, I put the coffee grounds in my compost bin. After the stuff in broken down enough, I put it right into the garden. I can't put the stuff right into the garden because my outside cats will have themselves a field day with it. LOL
