the house we are renting was previously owned by an elderly lady who I guess was quite a gardener. my problem is she planted some type of onion in the front flower beds. last spring I cleaned out the whole area but they have come back up. anyway to get rid of them besides pulling them out every year ? |

I prefer flowers in my front flower beds to vegetables and they have taken over the entire space, there is no room for anything else |

Just curious...why do you want to get rid of them? Onions are so beneficial and keep bugs away from your other plants and flowers. I've been trying to "spread" onions around. Maybe that elderly lady possessed some gardening wisdom about those onions that could be used to benefit your new gardening endeavors!! Don't underestimate the savvy of elderly gardeners. They have some kind of gardening foo knowledge that us younger generation will never know.

They also could be called "pregnant onion", which is a non-edible onion, they produce babies off the sides of the mature onion, and also seeds from the flower stalk, they can be container raised, and they are quite interesting to watch grow with babies poping up over night...

Sounds like it might be chives. I think you will just have to keep cleaning them out until they are gone. Don't let them go to seed, they will take over everything. But use the tops like onions. Really good in soups and egg dishes.
