Posted - Jan 16 2012 : 6:24:31 PM I need some help. Looking for the best way to tan a sheep hide. I have been looking and most blogs say uses acid. I would rather not. I have used brain tanning on deer skin and that worked ok. Can anyone give me any help or tell me where to look. Thanks |

Posted - Jan 16 2012 : 9:04:42 PM I tanned a deer hide and I did some digging on some old fashioned methods. It was about 8 years ago that I did that and I don't even know where the info is that I had printed off but I do know that I got the info online... The hide turned out beautiful with all the hair still on it. All I remember doing is taking forever to prepare it then doing the rinsing/short soak in the water then I don't remember what I did after that until I stretched it, then I used brains and neatsfoot oil and I can't remember after that. I just had surgery 6 weeks ago and the side effect I've suffered from it is memory less. It's so frustrating. I can only remember bits and pieces of pretty much everything. Hoping those memories will come back eventually. Anyhow I do know for sure that I didn't use any acid. I wanted to do it as naturally and effectively as possible. I know some methods tell you to use ashes to make something kind of like lye but I don't think thats what I did. If I remember I will post back! Good luck!
