Posted - Dec 19 2011 : 04:50:00 AM Well, thanks for the info. I store mine next to the stove too! I threw away a sprouted one last week because it smelled really strong . .. Are they OK to use?

Posted - Dec 18 2011 : 08:18:01 AM Ashley that is great information. I did harvest mine very late. I remember it being a blistering hot day when I did it, and didn't spent much time getting them from the garden back into the storage room. But I don't hang mine, and maybe they didn't dry well laying flat on the grate that I put them on. The garlic that is sprouting has also been sitting on the counter where steam from the stove rises and probably gets a lot more moist heat than it would sitting in the pantry.

Posted - Dec 18 2011 : 04:36:18 AM My garlic always sprouts, too. I never really thought anything of it and use it anyway, but I did a little research this morning.
This is some information I found. I'm not sure if it's correct, but it's something to consider... "A precursor to shelf life also starts with the handling during and after harvest, as well as how long it takes to get it from field to shelf. If the bulb was harvested late, wasn't dried/cured properly, sat in a hot warehouse for too long, then sat in a super's warehouse for longer before hitting the shelves, it's probably going to sprout on you."
Would like to see what others have to say..
Much love, Ashley
