I decided to make pickles with my excess cucumbers instead of taking the 20 cucumbers I had to the farmer's market this morning.

I went to the farmer's market anyway to get some stuff I needed.

I bought some long yellow and red peppers. I thought they were banana peppers. Anyway I cut them and chopped them and put them in my chow-chow recipe and 6 hours later, my left hand is still tingling.

Can they be that hot? It is definitely a capsaicin warmth, like the liniment my doctor prescribed a while back.

Is my chow-chow going to be ruined because the peppers are too hot? This is the first time I have ever made it and don't even know what it is supposed to taste like!

I know all about the pepper tingle. We are supposed to wear gloves when dealing w/ hot peppers. How were you to know?!?

The pain can last all day, and sadly I don't know of any remedy to take the burn away. When you eat hot things, I have heard about eating crackers or bread or drinking milk. For hands, maybe dunking them in milk???? Maybe this could neutralize the capscasin.

Well, Brenda, if you think the chow-chow is too hot, what I would do is make another batch and mix it all together, thus reducing the amount of peppers in the whole thing. You will have LOTS of chow-chow, but really, can one ever have ENOUGH chow-chow? (Think Christmas presents...) And if your hands are still tingling, try washing them with some ground coffee if you don't have coffee soap. Coffee soap helps remove kitchen odors from your hands. When I haven't had soap around, I've soaped my hands up with regular soap and than take as much ground coffee as the palm of my hand will hold and then wash with that...keep scrubbing a good while. Then rinse, but try to not let it go down the drain, as my father always told us it will clog the drain...even if you have a garbage disposal. But anyhow, good luck with it. Oh, and chow-chow isn't supposed to be hot. It is just a medley of all those veggies. Let us know! Judy
