Hi girls -
I accidentally forgot about braiding my garlic once it dried a bit, and now I've got a small braid of 5 or 6 heads, and whole bunch of loose garlic heads that needs to be stored up for autumn and winter. I have never stored it other than braiding it (the store bought stuff never lasts). I went online to see the best way to store it, and found varying opinions. Then I had that "aha" moment and realized who'd honestly know best? Our wonderful farmgirl sisters!
Please help!!!

I was told that you can store in the freezer and did so last year. I used soem of it and discovered that it is yellow. It still smells ok but it does change a bit. |

How about using the nylon stocking plan and just cutting out the toe and tying a little slipknot between the heads? Or if you have a lot of twisters you could use them between.
Now for another version of the question, what if I didn't get the garlic dug at the right time and the cloves are sprouting and growing,is there anything I can do besides freezing?

I bought more garlic than I needed & just put it in a zip baggie & stuck it in the freezer. Seems to work alright for me....

I have read that placing in a dry place is where you want to store them. There are also garlic keepers that supposedly work great too!

I have always put mine in an old onion mesh bag and it seems to keep well that way.

I prefer the nylon stocking method, but usually don't have any(especially since I don't wear them), so I use old potato bags.
Nylon stockings, or panty hose, you drop one head in, tie the stocking fairly tightly around it, drop another head in, tie around it, and so forth. This should make a chain-like appearance of galic inside then knot, then garlic, then knot, and so forth.
The old potato bags I only half fill, then hang in a drafty spot, such as in the hallway the fan blows through to cool the house, so they dry completely before moving then to the basement.
I hope one of these methods works well for you.
By the way, you have to cut the heads out of the stockings, or at least I do, to get to them, so it's a one time use thing. Maybe you could figure a better way to be able to reuse the stockings by altering the method a little.
