Who knew zucchinis could be so sneaky and hide under tomato plants and end up looking like they've used steroids? Take a look at this monster I found hiding in my little 5x5 raised bed garden yesterday evening. I see some breads and cakes in its future :)

If you don't want to stuff it, grate it up and use it for zuchinni bread. I grate lots of zuch and portion it out into 2 1/2 cups per small ziploc bag and freeze it for winter. The 2 1/2 c. is just right for a loaf of bread or perfect for thickening up spaghetti sauce.

Cheryl, totally off topic here but I have that exact same table your zuc is on! At least the formica and the silver edging. Is yours a folding table? Mine is, actually I have two, one big one little. Got both from my MIL. They are both now in my sewing room.
And by the way, I'd stuff that zuc bad boy and smother him with marinara. Yum!

Hey Brandee...I looked all those up! Awesome to know that there are Heirlooms instead of the newer
8 ball. That makes me feel better also knowing they have been around longer than a couple of years.
OK...you girl proved to me that you "can teach an old dog new tricks." Thanks for digging deeper and
educating me! Like I said, they do taste good. I was just so upset about them possibly being
GMO.

No, Angela It isn't an heirloom. But they are called 8 Ball zuchinni. And I believe they have only
been on the Market a couple of years...atleast out here in the Northwest. Don't know about other parts of the Country.

I just looked in my heirloom seed catalog. There is a variety of zuke that is round and dark green called '8 ball'! This could very well be an heirloom variety! I was so surprised by the selection of vegetables that are heirloom. So many varieties! It took me weeks to pick out exactly what I wanted to order!

Denise...Thanks for the expanded knowledge on the subject and I do get that. BUT did you hear about how over in China they put too much growth hormone in their fertilizer (I believe) and all the watermelons started exploding in the fields??? I know a lot of GMO is happening and a lot of growth hormones fed to our plants and veggies and animals and I just don't go for that kind of messing with how God meant it to be. Do you know what I mean? What you were talking about was breeding (like Hybrid Roses for Example) they are beautiful, Or like a friend of mine crossed two kinds of Lilac Bushes and got a Lilac Tree that had both Pink and White Flowers on it (I believe he grafted those) and all that is OK with me. I just don't like them messing with our food sources. Call my picky! But that is how I feel. If you look at all the younger generations of kids being born and you see that it is now "Normal" to have 8,9,10,12 lb babies...it is because of the mothers eating foods that have been fed growth hormone. I just don't like what are Country is doing with all our food supply. Have you ever bought frozen strawberries that are bigger than golf balls.
We have! And I know that is not the normal size of a Strawberry.

Actually just because they are round does not automagically equal GMO.
Cross breeding varieties of plants for a particular characteristic has been done by hand since the dawn of time, and does not in general allow for crosses of species or things that are not compatible to cross in the first place. It uses the normal biological process of the plants, and multiple generations of offspring to slowly change the end result to have that desired trait. It's just like breeding animals for a certain color or speed or whatever. It's a natural process, basically.
This is a very very different thing then Genetic Modification: A genetically modified organism (GMO) or genetically engineered organism (GEO) is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. These techniques, generally known as recombinant DNA technology, use DNA molecules from different sources, which are combined into one molecule to create a new set of genes. This DNA is then transferred into an organism, giving it modified or novel genes

Brandee...no, I found just the opposite. It seemed like way less seeds and more dense, but that is probably because they were comparing them to a smaller grocery store size. Like I said above...we like our zuchinni big in the Northwest! lol Actually I love all sizes, doesn't matter. I will tell you the thing that I don't like...is you know this has to be a genetically modified zuchinni and I picked them out by mistake. I just know what the plants look like and I went to where it said "Zuchinni Plants" picked out a couple healthy looking ones and never read the info on the plant stake until after I got my first round zuke. I do not like my food messed with. I want a zuchinni to look like a zuchinni and to know it hasn't been altered.
I keep thinking...what next? Will I have square tomatoes next year????? Know what I mean? I grow organic and I don't want altered food. OK...I will step down off my Soap Box now! LOL

I just went and looked up the seeds, some of the reviews say they have more seeds than meat, did you find this true??

I have an heirloom variety that is yellow! I wasn't able to plant it this year due to weather, but I have the seed ready for next year!

Cheryl...we grow them just like that in the Pacific Northwest on purpose. We love to cut them length wise and scoop out the seeds and meat, and mix them with hamburger (make it just like you would your favorite kind of meatloaf)and then fill the tunnels you carved out in the zuchinni with the meat loaf mixture, then put some tomato sauce or katsup over the top...pop them into a 350 degree oven and cook for 45-1 hr.

They are called zuchinni 8 balls...not what I was expecting when I picked out my plants.
They taste great though!!!
