We just moved here last summer and last fall we noticed a pear tree and tasted the pears--eeeeeeewwww--so bitter and kind of "dry" and make your mouth puckery, even when ripened! We picked some and let them ripen in a box and let some ripen on the tree, still all bitter! What's up with that? Any ideas? We picked some this year too and I'm going to try pearsauce with tons of sugar--see if that might work, and I'm also going to try making syrup, but do you know why they're all so bitter?
Oddly enough, also on the same property (we don't own it, but can pick fruit from it) are some apple trees which the fruit has a deep red color flesh and tastes very sour/bitter (but they're big like regular apples, not crabapples!) I tried them last year for pie filling and they were great!

well, I wouldn't doubt that they are old trees--I think probably quite old in fact. They sure are yucky. I did get some syrup made, we'll have it on pancakes and such, but everything else, pearsauce, etc (even with lots of sugar) was jjust too bitter and puckery. idk.

Sheila, maybe they are old trees? I tried some red apples off of a tree in an old orchard that hadn't been tended in years and they were the worst apples I have ever tasted. They were also rock hard even though they were definitely ripe and falling off the trees. |
