Posted - Aug 30 2011 : 8:29:45 PM I just came in from covering my garden. In August. Again. sigh....
I have 35 tomato plants out there with about 300 lbs of tomatoes on them. I am not letting them go without a fight. I closed up my cold frame, and covered my hoop houses and put frost cloths down on my uncovered raised beds (well most of them--didn't bother for the root crops and the brassicas) It seems so early for this! I am so not ready for winter!

Posted - Sep 01 2011 : 1:49:14 PM Covered everything like crazy. No substantial damage! A few random leaves sticking out from under the cloth got bit, but all systems go!

Posted - Aug 31 2011 : 5:32:12 PM Hi Mountaingirl. We can have frost any month of the year here. More often than not, there is no frost in August, but it does happen often enough that we have a plan for it--the hoophouses. Almost always though, it is freezing fairly regularly by the end of September. This year we had frost in June, July, and now August. Sigh.....

Posted - Aug 31 2011 : 4:29:20 PM Hi Kristi, First off my friend and I stayed in Redmond when we went to the Sisters Quilt show. Beautiful area. Is this typical for you to have a frost this early. Redmond is considered high desert isn't it. I have learned so much since moving from the flatland to areas with different elevations. Where I live it's about 2400 feet and I'm 8 miles to the center of town. During the winter months it could be snowing here, freezing rain half way to town ( I have a very winding steep hill to go down) and raining in town. We learned fairly quickly that hoop houses are the way to go.JoAnn |

Posted - Aug 31 2011 : 4:00:44 PM I saw on the news this morning that a Winter Weather Advisory had been posted for Glacier National Park. Several inches of snow was predicted! I am so not ready, seems like summer just got here!

Posted - Aug 31 2011 : 09:17:45 AM If it froze last night it wasn't hard enough to do much damage. I have a couple of hanging baskets of petunias that may have been lightly nipped, but everything on the ground was all right. Supposed to be colder tonight though. THAT is why I plant the really tender stuff in hoop houses. Makes covering SO much faster and easier. Last night though, things did not go according to plan. I think when we made the newest hoop house, we must have gotten a defective roll of 6 mill plastic. As I went out and attempted to roll it down over my tomatoes, it just disintegrated! No protection whatsoever. I panicked for a minute, and then ran up to Wally World and bought a large tarp, which I then rolled over the house and staked down with tent stakes. Gonna have to recover that house! I think I will research material a bit and see if I can find something that will let the light through, but be more durable. What do you think of tent canvas? The older hoophouses were still functional, but I can see cracks starting in those ones too. (though the plastic on them is MUCH older and might just be normal wear and tear).
My brother called me while I was covering the house and asked me what I was doing. "I am engaging in hand to hand combat with mother nature for my tomatoes--if that old biddy (insert other "B" word here) wants them, she is going to have to fight me for them". He says I am a Guerilla Gardener! :-) ROFL!

Posted - Aug 31 2011 : 01:09:28 AM Kristi...Frost...it is too soon!!! I am praying for an Indian Summer so I can keep harvesting my squash and tomatoes that are just coming on. You are too close to me too! It might be a sign to come that we are going to have a harsh winer. I hope not!
Blessings, peggy
