Cilantro -fresh
Curled Parsley - fresh
Bay Leaves

Garlic - goes in almost everything!

Right now I have lemon thyme, Greek oregano, regular ol' thyme, and some purple and green sage. Oh, and some spearmint that got out years ago (uh-oh!) and some deeeeelicious chives.
I used to have a huge herb garden. The people that used to live here had an in-ground pool that they took with them. That left a huge, perfectly round piece of absolutely billiard ball bald ground. Well I decided that was an herb garden waiting to happen! I tilled it up fluffy, made a center planting, made spokes like a wheel, and had a center circle path, too. Each little section was filled with something: borage, lemon balm, rosemary, sage, thyme, lavender, hyssop, dill, nasturtiums, violas, different colors of basil, scented geraniums, etc.
Time went on and I let it go. The persistent chives and spearmint are all that remain; it's been taken over by sod. I even let my adjacent asparagus patch go. (It was tired; it was more than 35 years old.) I sure miss that pretty little garden though; maybe I'll make another one someplace else sometime. Unfortunately, that spot is too shady now to make it work there again.

Oh, tough one. Like potato chips, I can't pick just one! Fresh basil made into pesto eaten that same day; then I freeze the rest to get me through the winter. And Greek Oregano in a salad with feta cheese, now that is one lusty tasting herb! Hubby uses Italian Parsley (and rosemary on the grill) mostly for cooking. He doesn't like basil much, but I married him anyway!! I have a big lemon verbena, a red flowered sage, and some lavender plants growing under the clothesline. I love to cut and hang big bunches in the kitchen in the autumn, too. Cannot imagine our lives without those little gems! Nance |

without a doubt, basil! Maybe that's the italian in me! :)
Thyme and rosemary have to be close seconds...oh and flat-leaf parsley! Oh...they're all good!!
Has anyone tried grating fresh nutmeg instead of using the bottle grated? I haven't yet, but am wondering if it's as fantastic as I hear! (not really an herb, but a spice is close enough for my mind to tie together!) |

i just made some 'basil butter' to go with the cheese biscuits i'm making for dinner tonight .. i know it doesn't have much time to absorb .. but it'll look pretty! xo

My garden has a lot of basil, thyme, two kinds of oregano, dill, 2 rosemary plants ( bring them in in the winter) cilantro, parsley... I can't remember what else! I love to run my hands over everything and smell that for the next hour or so...it is better than any perfume I have ever smelled! If anyone does market that perfume, I am so there!!!!!

Garlic Is My favorite herb!!! Second is fresh basil. I also like fresh dill.

I love anise hyssop, basil, lemon balm, rosemary, chocolate mint,lavender, oregano and thyme. I cook with lavender as well as smell it. Hmmmm. Lavender sugar cookies sound pretty tasty right about now!

oh .. and watermellon spitting contests is one of my most favorite things to do whenever watermellon presents itself at a gathering!

My absolute favorite herb is rosemary, even though it makes my DH itch like crazy if he brushes up against it! (That's why my herb garden will be for me and he can have his own if he likes!)

Okay, so how exactly does one spit green? I am thinking that you would mush a bunch of the parsley in the mouth and get a good mouthful of green goo going, then let it fly? This would be something fun to teach some little kids!

How could I forget lavender????Just to hard to narrow it down for sure!!
I love the "spitting green" story. I have an aunt that was so fun like that and she and her kids would have done that..as well as jumping on beds. Her kids always got to wear whatever they wanted..WHEREVER they wanted..they looked pretty funny sometimes..but I was more than a little jealous. It was like Halloween every day in that house..haha

I love parsley, chives and lavender. Two for cooking and one for smellin. My grandpa taught me to spit green with parsley and I taught both my sons. I figure you're not a farm boy if you can't spit green. Yeah I know spitting is not nice. I taught my sons to jump on bed too. My mother says I'm crazy.

Lemon Verbena and Basil for sure. I love all sorts of herbs..dill is another favorite. I could never narrow it down to just one!

Oh Frannie, you're too wonderful! I love all of your new questions here tonight and seems I agree with you on most everything! Basil is my absolute favorite and I just whipped up a batch of pesto for the freezer tonight! There's a "fresh" photo on my blog today. I'm also growing oregano, chamomile, rosemary and lavender. I love growing herbs!
