On my way into town I noticed some people used a blue tarp (the ones you can get at a hardware store) and they covered their entire garden with it except of course where they planted the plants.
Has anyone else done this? I didn't think that those kind of tarps would breath enough to allow for proper growth of the plants.
What kind of mulch do you use for your garden?
I tried newspaper and I liked it around my tomatoes but it was too messy looking so I'd like to try something else next year and since gardening things are going on sale now I'm thinking ahead to next year's garden already!

I love Ruth Stout's book and what she calls Lazagna gardening!
I use the shredded paper and then cover it with old straw. Or I have used the shucks from the corn after I canned corn. Those are real good and I have even used them in the walk ways between the raised beds.

I use old hay that I get from the local farmers or our hay that gets mold in it, I read a book many years ago by Ruth Stout " The No Work Garden" worth reading. I have started a new garden (3 years ago) awful soil that is now starting to come around. it's getting better every year :)

I have never before seen the tarps used as mulch. I just use my oak and maple leaves that fall to the ground. I put the leaves everywhere, in the garden and in my flower beds. It actually looks really pretty, and boy do I get a work out for a few weeks raking as they fall :). My blueberries do so well with the leaves as mulch, much better than the stuff I get from the stores.
