I have to move from the country to a city for school and want desperately to grow lettuce and other produce in my apartment. I've had excellent success with growing herbs in flower pots and flower boxes and want to try the same with the produce.....any suggestions?

Too much thread, so little time!

I do everything in pots. This year I had:

All my herbs (oregano, thyme, cilantro, rosemary, dill)
4 varieties of tomatoes
3 varieties of pepper
green onion
radishes
lettuce
green beans

It's super easy. You don;t have to worry about weeding. Watering is easy. I just use big Rubbermaid storage containers with holes punched in the bottom. When you are shopping for plants or seeds look for ones that say good for containers (I noticed lots more this year) or dwarf varieties.
There is a posting on my blog from earlier in the summer if you want to see pictures!

Google for a list of self pollinating vegetables. There are lots of them. Any root vege, carrots, onions, beets, so forth will grow and form for you. All leaf veges, cabbage included. And there is also the beans and peas!
