Hello to all you with green thumbs and garden experts. This year for the first time I planted brussel spouts. I used starts that I bought at Home Depot or Lowes, I forget which one. We planted the day after Easter so it was in April. The plants have grown, but not produced. They were watered regularly, but not overly.
I know what they should look like, but that's not what is happening with my plants. They have the tall center stem and plenty of leaves, but no sprouts. Do they take this long to produce the vegetable? I don't remember if they had blooms on them either.
So what is the secret and what have I overlooked that should have been done? One thing, I know, is I probably should have done a bit more research, but other than that, what? Just curious, was so looking forward to steaming up a batch for supper.

I know I live in a different zone but I couldn't pick brusselsprouts until October last year. My last pick was for Thanksgiving dinner. |

Pinch out the top of the tall stem which will encourage side sprout production once the plants are about 16" to 20" tall. It is still early enough in the season and sprouts should just be starting to form now. Look along the stem in the notches where the leaves come out. You should see little wee mini brussels. They are better after frost, so there's still plenty of growing time left. Also, watch for aphids. I think brussel sprouts are their favorite food, at least around these parts. Banana peels around the base of the plants is supposed to work wonders, but I haven't tried it yet.
