This is my first year having a compose pile (a med size black thing). Hubby put oil in it this morning and now i don't know what to do. Is it ruined? should I just start over?

 Any help would be appreciated1

                | Littleredd | Posted - Aug 06 2011 : 10:23:59 AM Honestly? If you add enough dry matter (straw or dried leaves) to sop up the oil and turn it all really well. I don't see why you'd have to start over. If you already have don't worry about it! You can definitely add chicken droppings and the bedding too. In fact, that's great stuff for compost piles. The key is to keep a variety of things in it. Brown matter and green. So if you add a bunch of the bedding and droppings, which are acidic, make sure you add brown matter (straw or leaves etc.) to offset that. Anytime you add something like kitchen scraps etc. add more brown matter. It's all about balance. Not too wet, not too dry, not too much of any one thing.

                | emsmommy5 | Posted - Jul 30 2011 : 4:12:52 PM Alot of oil? If so, I would probably start over if it were me. That's just going to get rancid smelling. If it was a tiny bit, you could try for a while and see how it does.
