Hey girls!
I was shredding newspaper for the compost tonight and noticed that there are a LOT more colorized pictures in there than there used to be. I had read somewhere a long while ago that we can't use colored newspaper in the compost bin... Does that mean ALL colored newspaper, or intensely colored newspaper like the comic section of the Sunday Paper or coupon inserts, etc??? I would hate to spend a lot of time cutting out the colored pics, but I'll do it if I have to... And does anyone know why we can't use the colored sections??? Just wondering...

My understanding is that most of the inks used in newsprint is soy based. |

Thanks SO much, Elaine! Hmmmm... I guess the jury is out on this, then? I'll have to call the papers and find out what inks they're using... My husband reads more than one on Sunday. I knew we couldn't use the glossy pages, but I wasn't aware of the dangerous chemicals in the black inks they used. Eghads. I honestly don't want to put ANYTHING dangerous in my compost. To be honest, I was even a little concerned about the paper itself. My brother and sister-in-law live in a town with a HUGE papermill - it stinks to high Heaven when its in operation, I can't imagine what goes into the paper itself (let alone what is happening in their groundwater). That's why I've never recycled paper plates (on the rare occasion we use them) - I'm not sure whether you are supposed to use them in compost or not, but the process going on up near my brother's place is enough to make me just not want to.
Well, I'll definitely make the calls today. I really REALLY appreciate that you took the time to find that article for me! You ROCK, sister!

Hi Nini~ I don't remember hearing anything about the colored sections - but I know we aren't supposed to use the glossy parts.
