Hey ladies...I have a question about cucumbers. I have one cucumber plant..so far I have only gotten two cucumbers and they have been sooo bitter you can't eat them...I don't know whats going on...can someone help me?...Thanks Nan...

Elinor...my cukes are hanging about 5 inches from my squash plants. I guess I should have done my homework before trying to grow some veggies. I'll move them further apart...hope it isn't too late. Thank you so much...Nan.

If you are growing the cucumbers too close to any kind of squash plants they may have cross polinated . That happened to me once and the cucumbers where terrible. |

Elaine and Kristina....Thank you...Im gonna transplant in better soil and try picking in early morning...I have my cukes and squash in topsy turvys and they are not doing well at all. I'll know better next time. Thanks again ladies, Nan.

Thanks Holly...i have them growing in a topsy turvy and i can't remember what kind of bag soil i used...that just might be the whole problem right there...i might try to trans plant in a large planter...upright...and see what happens. thanks Nan.

When are you picking them? If you are picking them late in the day in hot heat, that could be the reason. Pick them early in the morning for a better flavor. We found this to be helpful for us.

You may also check out the ph of your soil. You may need to add a bit of lime to sweeten them up. My mom swears by it to grow sweet melons in our clay soil. Cucumbers are of the same family and would benefit as well, if needed.

They say that bitterness is often caused by lack of consistency in moisture, so try keeping them well-watered and see if that helps. Though, I've gotten bitter cucumbers from vines that were watered daily, too ...
