So what is the trick to get carrots to sprout. I have the hardest time to get them to come up. Hubby put a board above them to keep the heat of the sun and wind off, but we only got stringy things that died as soon as the board came off. I have others that I just seeded and try to keep watered, but nothing yet.

Help

I'm at nearly 6000 feet and we put the carrots in the area we built up last year with compost. Our soil is Alkaline. I went back out today and I did have some growth in two of the four areas. I think the third did not get enough water. It's also very hard to tell as this was a new garden area last year and we are still dealing with some grass and it all looks the same when it starts! Maybe I'm being impatient too, but water seems to be the big issue for us as we are on irrigation. Maybe I'll build some remay tents to protect them until they are bigger.

broadcasting the seed instead of row seeding seems to make my carrots grow so much better as well...just a thought.

Laurie - I know that carrots really need lime. I added a little to my soil a few weeks before planting my seeds, and it made a huge difference. I don't know if it's okay to add it once the seeds are in, though; I think you need to add it to the soil way in advance of planting. You may want to do a search online about using lime in the garden, okay? I also add bloodmeal for nitrogen. We also had lots of compost and manure this year, which I think really helped, like Angela recommended. As she also said, keeping the seeds moist until they sprout is really important, too. Mine are coming in pretty well, thankfully! I hope this helps! - Nini

Just curious since I love all things plants! Can you send a pic of your site(the soil area you are growing them in?),or describe your soil? Also, are you in high elevation rockies or down in the dry area of Colorado? just hoping to help.....I may have a little advice to follow...

Lots of compost. I also have had success by puttin a board or newspaper directly on the ground over the seeds. Give them 2 weeks while waterin every other day or so. Then lift the board off and use it as a shade maker. I have even used actual shade cloth layed loosly or tented over the row. After about another 2 weeks they should be stable enough to allow into full sun.

I try to always plant mine in the early winter when the ground is beginnin to crust over or as early as the ground can be worked in the spring. That lets them sprout on their own when its warm enough to, but cool enough not to damage them.

Carrots are delicate babies, but viralent adults!
