Posted - Jun 10 2011 : 6:56:23 PM I bought 2 four packs of celery from the nursery since Celery is on the Organic Dirty Dozen and seems to grow well in my area. There seemed to be too many leaves for it to be just one or two seedlings, so I carefully washed the roots of the potting mix and found out that I had dozens of seedlings! I carefully hoed a divit for the seedlings and soaked the soil while the rinsed seedlings were in water. I then used my finger to poke a hole in the muddy soup and gently tried to place the seedling in without damaging the roots.
After that I tamped the mud around the base of the celery seedling and watered again gently. I am waiting a few days to see if the seedlngs handled the rough treatment. I am hoping they all made it! I probably planted 18-24 seedlings tonight and still have 7 more packs left to do!! We'll have all the celery that we could ever want if this keeps up!

Posted - Jun 18 2011 : 05:42:41 AM Celery also can be frozen, to use in soups or casseroles. I just chop it and dice and let it freeze on the cookie sheet and then put into freezer bag. Just pull out a handle and throw into the dish. I am wanting to dehydrate celery also. |

Posted - Jun 18 2011 : 05:35:34 AM Where am I going to place all of these little suckers?! I did three more cells yesterday and couldn't plant them all! I now have a double row of Celery in my garden I guess next I am going to have to start placing them in the area I had reserved for my cantelope, cucumbers, watermelon, and corn. I still have 4 more cells to go!! I should have just bought one pack!! I am going to have Celery tucked in all different corners of my lawn!! LOL

Posted - Jun 13 2011 : 06:48:25 AM We grow celery here every year. Unfortunatly this year the bugs at all but 2 of my transplants and the weather doesn't look promising for a long summer so I didn't start over. Far cry from the 50 I usually plant. I dehydrate my celery, stalks in one jar and leaves in the other. Works great for soups and casseroles. Don't forget to save some fresh to use in homemade tomato soup!

Posted - Jun 11 2011 : 1:52:57 PM Hey Alee...I always can up some jars of sliced celery too. It is sure handy to have for casseroles in the winter time. Very simple too...any canning book will have times and all..you have to pressure cook it but it is simple and fun. I do 1/2 pints and pint jars.

Posted - Jun 11 2011 : 05:07:54 AM I just went out and counted! 37 celery from one cell!! And I have 7 more to go!! They are all looking pretty good this morning and it rained in the night which was perfect so the roots are kept moist. I a going to check out how close I can square foot garden celery becaues I think I am going to need to have compact space. There is a restaraunt here in town that buys local food. Once the celery (if it matures in time) is ready I might call them and see if they can use it. If not I might just have a massive baking day where I make all of our favorite dishes that need celery. Another option is to let some of it got to see to harvest for next year and for baking.

Posted - Jun 10 2011 : 7:45:39 PM I have not seen any celery here. I guess it won't grow here. But I love celery. I hope yours grows for you. So you had 8 plants and you got 18-24 from just 1 cell? You will be swimming in celery.

Posted - Jun 10 2011 : 7:01:42 PM Cool! 'Can't wait to hear they do, Alee! :) When I thinned out my carrot seedlings this year, I transplanted them to pots on my deck. Guess what! They're GROWING!!! It's SO exciting! I bet your celery will do just great, too!!! Maybe if all your celery comes in and all my carrots come in, we can find a couple of farmgirls with extra onions, potatoes, herbs, etc. so we can all share and make ourselves a whole bunch of yummy soup this fall! ;) Happy "farming!"
