Posted - Jul 16 2006 : 12:17:05 PM It looks like a winter radish to me. We grow some that look just like that called (china rose) they get really big and when they begin to bolt the center stalk looks like that. The leaves are prickly are yours. The radish is long also. They are my favorite tasting radish

Posted - Jul 16 2006 : 08:27:09 AM It looks like a beet We have the same vairety instead of round, they are oblong like this
the greens are mild and tasty in a salad too to me it all tastes kind of like mild dirt......(not that I go around eating dirt all the time) did you gals know beeys are good for the blood?? hubby is training for a cycling competition and has read where eating liver and beets helps boost the blood. He participated in a ride yesterday and rode 60 miles in 3 1/2 hours
he can have the liver though |

Posted - Jul 12 2006 : 06:59:18 AM Sue, you know I hadn't thought of that, that because it was an heirloom that the leaves would be different. I'll have to tell my sweetie that....!!
I'll let you know Melissa........I may just pick it and cut it and taste it.....and will let you all know.

Posted - Jul 12 2006 : 06:54:27 AM It looks like a beet to me. Have you tasted the leaves? I don't think a seed company would send you something poisonous.

Posted - Jul 12 2006 : 04:41:14 AM Georgette, if it's a heirloom the leaves could be different as many are. This could be a beet, radish or horseradish ( which will turn white), take your pick?? lol You could always cut it up and smell it, let us know.

Posted - Jul 12 2006 : 03:37:07 AM Aren't horseradish white and the leaves different? I don't know if I should pull it out and try eating it? I don't want to get .... sick........!! I was thinking that with the heirloom seeds we got, a seed from something else got in there. All I had in the garden last year was sunflowers and a zucchini......and tomatoes at the other end. Not knowing what it is, we've left it to grow!!!

Posted - Jul 11 2006 : 4:15:27 PM It looks to me like a radish that's been in the ground too long. Are the leaves a little prickly?
