Yep, I'm r.e.a.ll.y short, but that's not what I'm talking about. This morning I braved the humidity to pick one more batch of violets for jelly. So, I'm sitting on the ground in the woods to the north of the house. Violets grow right through the ground cover which is a wonderful cover of moss...so soft to walk on barefoot. As I picked the violets I could see little poofs of dust..must have been spoors from the moss. I never noticed that before. Made me smile. Also, the violets in that part of the woods were deep purple. Violets among the ferns are kind of a wine color. In the sun (a grassier area) they are white, yellow and a lighter blue. I know they have different names. I wonder if the soil has something to do with the color. I'm wandering..I know. Sure was beautiful out there though. Just sayin..

Angela, you know what's funny? The color of the jelly and the flavor all comes out the same..not matter what color the violets. I tried picking just the darkest blue for last batch and no diff (still pale pink). I'm thinking of adding a couple of drops of blue food coloring to see if it will go a little violet.
Caron, as beautiful as our place is...I discovered a few things the other day. (1) Do not accidentley leave your cell phone in your pocket when you go out to pick violets in paradise...someone will call. (2) Do not wear a shirt with a large, bright, glossy trumpet flower on the front when you are out in your paradise yard. Bumblebees really want that nectar.. and,(3) Do not wear cologne. Same as #2.

I have asked a few people about the dandilion color differences. Some are from mutations in the violet dna which produce white, yellows, and even reds. Those will reproduce same color offspring or at least similar colored.
The darker and lighter versions of the same color comes from the acidity in the soils. I so want dark violets but will sadly never have them. I have very highly alkaline soil, so mine are very pale in color.
I so envy you your wine colored violets. They must make a beautiful colored jelly! My jelly is always so pale. Just a blush of color to it.
Tastes great though! So all is not lost!
