I want to build one of these. Please let me know if you have any experience growing in a strawberry tower. I am curious how well they work.

Posted - May 04 2011 : 12:39:05 AM I like the looks of both the tower and the tower of terra cotta pots. Either way looks cool to me. I used a big plastic tub to put my strawberries this year. Wanted to contain them, in my garden. But those are really cool ideas.

Posted - May 03 2011 : 8:46:21 PM We have a strawberry tiered garden. Just two levels though. Joann is correct in saying you have to be extremely vigilant in watering. And don't be fooled, weeds still find their way in. However, the vigilance in watering and the weeding are all worth it to have some great strawberries all in one spot. yummmmmm! Another pro about it is you don't have to bend over as far.

Posted - May 03 2011 : 5:18:10 PM I didn't have great luck with strawberries, but we had a cabin on a lake and 40 acres of recreational property we camped at so we would be gone for a few days at a time and it did dry out too much. When we moved out of Minnesota it didn't come with us. J |

Posted - May 03 2011 : 5:00:10 PM Ok, I have done that with flowers. And terra cotta dries out really fast too. But that sure is pretty and so many berries.

Posted - May 03 2011 : 4:53:14 PM Here is an alternative that I may do with terra cotta pots. It may be a better alternative that won't dry out so fast. http://www.burkesbackyard.com.au/factsheets/Herbs-Fruit-and-Vegetables/Strawberry-Tower/2528

Posted - May 03 2011 : 4:52:03 PM JoAnn... That ws my fear that it would be hard to keep moist. Do you still use yours? How well did the berries grow in it?
Kris... I know, they seem magical. There are instructions all over the internet if you look up "how to build a strawberry tower".

Posted - May 03 2011 : 4:42:07 PM That looks amazing. I would love to have one. Can you imagine no weeds and just walk right outside to pick? How nice is that. Looks like alot of lumber though. Did you see any plans for it?

Posted - May 03 2011 : 4:41:32 PM I found one at a garage sale years ago. I found it extremely difficult to keep watered and dried out quickly. I finally put in a PVC pipe with holes drilled at intervals to let water get to all levels--it was still difficult. You have to be extremely viligant in your watering. JoAnn |
