Posted - May 03 2011 : 4:34:09 PM Has anyone ever grown luffa gourds before? I have some seedlings going and I plan on planting them in the next couple of weeks. I am curious if anyone has had success from seed to using their luffa in the bath.

Posted - Mar 18 2012 : 6:14:45 PM I grew them about 2 yrs ago with little success. The plant itself, well,it STINKS! (literally the odor is very BLECGH) I got a few decent gourds and they rotted inside before I could get a decent "luffa" I have not tried again. Perhaps someone with more experience could chime in? |

Posted - Mar 18 2012 : 1:39:29 PM I'm going to try some this year. My husband started making soap last year and I think it would be nice to gift the soap with a loofah :)

Posted - Mar 18 2012 : 09:20:09 AM Well, Last year didn't work for me trying to grow these. I kept trying to get them started inside, but I think my window was not warm enough for them. I finally managed two plants in a container outside, but they were scragly (I didn't trellis them oops) and never produced a fruit. I think they didn't have enough time by the time I got them to take. Did anyone else have luck last year?
I have four starts going now and my fingers crossed they will take. This year I hope to have better luck and give them more attention. Last year I was a bit distracted and uncomfortably pregnant and too much of the garden suffered.

Posted - May 10 2011 : 07:24:11 AM I couldn't find the seeds in my local nursery, so I ordered them online. I think I found them on amazon.com. You can just look up luffah gourd seeds and find them online.

Posted - May 09 2011 : 3:15:57 PM I grew them for the first time last year. The vines grew very large, but I ended up with only one luffa at the end of the season. I think I may have planted them too late ... ? Hope you have great luck with yours!

Posted - May 09 2011 : 09:07:45 AM I am super bummed. It got really hot in my area for a few days and I left my gourds in my greenhouse and forgot to ventilate it and a bunch of my starts burned up and shriveled away. What a waste!!! At least I can save about six starts.

Posted - May 04 2011 : 08:45:07 AM Indrid: You must have posted the same time as me. I just saw your post. Do you have any idea why they only flowered? I wonder if you have to help them polinate f you don't have a lot of bees in your area? I did read that they need a long, warm growing season.

Posted - May 04 2011 : 07:50:23 AM Laurie: Please keep me updated on your progress. I planted my seeds in six packs and they are growing really fast in my greenhouse. I will be putting them in the ground around mid-May. I need to find a good spot and put up some sort of trellis for them.
