I've had a lavender shrub in a pot for about 3 years now.
It's past time to divide it.
Do I just take a shovel and slice down the middle?

OH! I didn't know you can propigate from cuttings!
The plant is looking a bit woody, and I just forgot to prune it. It's in a large wooden planter box.
I was afraid it might be root bound and time to give it some breathing space.
More would be nice, so yes, I'll prune and in addition to, take a few clippings to try and propigate elsewhere! |

Anna, you can divide larger lavender clumps if they are multi-stemmed. The goal is to end up with a healthy clump of roots and one or more undisturbed stems with each division. What you don't want to do is split a single stem or trunk in half. Typically the best time to divide lavender is in the fall. If it's still really early in the growing season where you are and your plants don't have any new growth yet you may still be able to divide and replant it this Spring. Good luck!

I've never divided lavender, I wouldn't do it, it grows with a main, woody stem. I propagate it from cuttings. It's quite easy to root. The cuttings should be fairly firm, hardened off new growth, that snaps not bends.

Gosh...I don't know if you can divide lavender. I prune mine every year too. Let me know if it is possible because I lost quite a few last year and would love to keep the plants that survived.
Is there a rule of thumb about transplanting 4 year old plants?
