I grew up knowing them as cold frames, but here in northwestern Wisconsin they are known as a hot box. I just had my handyman knock together three for me, out of old windows I rescued from ReStore and bits of wood. (It's basically a box, with angled sides to catch the most sun possible, covered by a glass window that opens.) I've never had one of my own, but I think it is going to be great for starting early spring greens--chard, spinach, lettuce. I can hardly wait! I was wondering, anybody out there use these? What do you grow in them? And, can you use them the whole growing season if you remove the glass lid when it finally heats up and becomes summer?
