sooooo excited .. been waiting to get some veggie plants into the earth. i'm thinking my garden is going to be reeeeeeely CROWDED this year and i'm going to learn some lessons the hard way! planted about 6 different varieties of tomatoes .. some cucumbers, squash, zucchinni .. we simply cannot grow too much of these ... also planted some red, green and yellow peppers .. some more herbs .. and threw a few flower seeds here and there! want to do some 'beans' too. i'd rather just buy corn and potatoes from local farmers. ohhhhhhh.. what else to throw into the ground?????? maybe some radishes?? will definitely do pumkins and gourds a little later in the summer too! what are you girls growing in YOUR gardens this summer?

Bobbi -

I live within the Portland city limits, so I have only a limited amount of space. However I am lucky because our lot is oversize compared to a standard lot. Standard is 5000 square feet, some lots are even smaller; 2500 square feet. We have an 8000+ square foot lot. So our house does not sit right on the front sidewalk, we have a nice set back and then we have a deep backyard. Even when we finally decide to finish our remodeling on the house, we won't lose too much of the back, because we will stay within the original footprint of the house and only take over where a carport already exsists. I should have shot the other side of the yard - from the vegetable garden you see lawn if you were to continue across the lawn I have a flower bed that goes the same distance down our fence as the veggies and the tool shed and is about 7' foot deep at the deepest point.

I'll have to take some more photos, I guess.

What a beautiful garden Anne! You must be so happy every time you get to walk through it! Very nice pictures as well. Do you have a lot of area to work with, or is that beautiful space confined to just one area?

you can be oh so smart, or you can be oh so positive. I wasted a lot of time being smart I prefer being positive.

Frannie -

Raspberries and boysens are green and still developing, but expect ripe ones around the 2nd week of July. The early blue blueberry bush is loaded with berries just starting to turn, the blue ray will be a bit later, but is looking to be almost as loaded as the other. Rhubarb pie via mail, hmmm.... that might take some doing. You could always come out to the west coast and we would have a whole BBQ with rhubarb pie and ice cream for desert . Or how about blueberry sauce over pound cake with ice cream, mmmm.

I have to agree with you Frannie...raw cauliflower and broccoli are yikky...sort of like a mouth full of sand! But steamed it's great..especially with a good cheese sauce! I have no idea what this orange cauliflower will taste like. The plants are HUGE though...almost two feet high already. I spent the day in my "tomato house" pruning tomatoes and pollinating the flowers. Now I have some very green hands! I planted two tomatillos in the other greenhouse and they are as tall as I am already...glad everyone likes salsa verde!
I have tons of blueberries and raspberries coming. Will have to get them netted soon or the robins will party in there until they're all gone.

Diane/Frannie -

I am doing purple carrots too - first time on those, thought it would be fun to have. Got rhurbarb, which I have already pulled on batch and about ready to do another. Pole sugar snap peas are blooming, pole blue lake beans are climbing away, onions, garlic, regular carrots, potatos, and tomatoes (beefsteak and golden jubilee), pulled one harvest of lettuce and reseeded for another (that is just barely starting to come up). Also have raspberries, boysens and blueberries. Strawberries aren't doing so well this year, going to do something different with them next year. I have a small space but it is all packed in along with some marigolds.

It's such a feeling of accomplishment to grow something to eat isn't it. I have a good variety of all the regular veggies, but his year I'm trying a couple of new things as well. A new (to me) cauliflower called "cheddar" that is orange instead of white. Also a new carrot called "purple haze"...yep, it's purple. Thought it would look neat in a mixed veggie salad. We had a good feed of baby beets the other night...was just like candy. I'm still anxiously awaiting that first sun-warmed, ripe tomato though.
