I am looking for the best vegetable gardening book I can find. I am a novice and this year began my first garden ... a square foot garden. My husband and I are thinking about making a row garden and transplanting the plants into it. I dunno, but next year - definitely a traditional garden for me.

ANyway, I am wanting to get my hands on a really good vegetable gardening book - something that will teach me what I need to know, but won't be too overwhelming for a novice like me, but that has really good information in it.

Thanks!

Try googling and look for Storey Books Publishing - they have sooo many country wisdom books on so many varied topics, surely you will find some great ones!

I've got quite a number of books specific to my region, but I find that an old out-of-print book called The Joy of Gardening by Dick Raymond is the most straight-forward and easiest reference book I have for gardening. I'm somewhat of a novice myself, and my father has always used this book (as well as receiving lots of the old Organic Gardening publications back in the 80's). . . and he always has an awesome garden. I highly recommend it!

I found Raymond's book used on eBay for like $3 a few years ago. I'm sure you can find it used still on Amazon or eBay. Happy gardening!

I like Garden Primer and use it a lot. I am carried away by a new book ("A Mother Earth News book for Wiser Living" --!!!) by Steve Soloman, called Gardening When it Counts. It's written to the novice and everybody else. He's like a "grandpa gardener" and a hoot to read. He gives all the details and tells why.

I love Four Season Harvest too. We'll be adding our third and four greenhouses in the next week or so. I went to Eliot's to see what he's doing in person so that I could be sure it's something I can and want to do. http://www.farm-garden.com/robin/day_tripping has my blog on the trip. Any day that I can have my hands in the soil is a good day so adding to the growing season is a thrill for me.

I will second the recommendation for Eliot Coleman's books, especially one called Four-Season Harvest! We are produce farmers and get a lot of questions from folks about growing gardens. This is the book we recommend.

I am envious of Robin's visit to see Eliot Coleman in action. He is the master.

http://fourseasonfarm.com/main/books/books_eliot2.html The New Organic Grower by Eliot Coleman. I've been a fan of Eliot's for a very long time. I went to one of his workshops in April and to his farm a few weeks ago and am even more inspired.

heather .. i have lots and lots of gardening books .. actually, don't have a 'favorite' .. i suggest you visit a large bookstore and look at lots of them until one just grabs your heartstrings! ALSO be sure to check 'peddlar mall' type stores and antiques shoppes for some great ones .. and usually at a better than 'new' price. that is where i get most of mine.

figure out which veggies you most want to grow and see what the various books offer. i reeeeeeeeely love the PICTURE gardening books the most. xo, frannie
