Ok, I need some ideas for trellises so that I don't have to buy those flimsy tomato cages. I hate those things, they bend too easily and cost too much. I live in town, so there are no branches laying around. Help!

We use bamboo, we have it growing a 2 sides of our yard so its free and handy. I have seen people who give it away on freecycle. It works great and last a few years. I use the thinner pieces from the top for flowers like the peonies, thicker ends for the tomatoes, i lean it against a fence for the cukes to climb, have used it over a dog lot we had to shade the dog. Very handy stuff.

I don't like those cages either. They never hold them up after they get too big. I found a pack of 25 of the bamboo stakes at Ace hardware for just $4. I also found some old electric fence metal posts in the goat vbarn when we moved here so I use those with hay string. Also had bought a bunch of porch railing and never used it so they are now stakes.

If you can find someone with a bamboo forest they usually let people thin some out. They make great stakes.

We went with the hedgerow method described in the Square Foot Gardening book. Two rows of sturdy fencing about 24-inches apart and plant the tomatoes down the middle about 24 to 30 inches apart. We will see how it works!

We had scraps of 1x1 inch lumber laying around so we used that to make boxes, about a 2 foot square at the top and bottom and about 2 foot uprights, though we didn't put them in the corners, but in the middle of each side. We used them for tomatoes and peonies.
I've seen people use old metal bed headboards for plants to climb on.
