To those of you who use a riding lawn mower to mow your yard, what blade height do you put the blades at. I put mine on three. My neighbor puts hers on 4, and her yard/grass looks nicer. But, when I put the blade to the height of 4, I can't tell where I am cutting.

I am loving how much better my knee is this year compared to last summer (had the knee replacement in August) gardening is so much easier again! no kneeling but I always tended to bend over for weeding and stuff anyhow. That is sure nice of you to help your neighbor like that Marly...I bet she really appreciates it!

My neighbor had a knee replacement surgery and she got herself a riding lawn mower and just loves it. Sometimes when I see her doing the yard, I crank up my mower and help her. That way we can have coffee and chat later. LOL

I have a neighbor (with a PERFECT yard) who mows at least twice a week. No way I can keep up with that. She is not thrilled with my dandelion crop either. I am sure she sprays her yard and my little fuzzy dandelion seeds float over..so I try to get at least the front yard (where the I majority of our grass is) mowed on Saturdays or close to once a week this time of year. I mow on a 3 when I can but a 4 most times. I really was upset when my husband insisted on getting our riding mower a few years ago...just thought it was lazy and silly. We have a big yard but I don't plan to have ANY grass in back eventually...and I am getting closer to that goal each year.(can't use the riding mower back there any longer..use the push mower for the daycare playyard and under the clothesline now) But...I have to say...since having knee replacement surgery on one knee last year I sort of love the riding mower. My knee is better, but gosh it is nice to hop on MY little green tractor and quickly mow. Cuts the time to about 1/3 of the time I used to spend mowing the front yard. Time is pretty important to me right now too.
It is a beautiful day here today..so I am looking forward to mowing this evening I think.

I detest using the bags to pick up the cut grass, leaves, etc. I've been telling my husband it can't be health for the yard. Now I have proof from your professional husband. Thank you both.

Ha ha! DH swears that no matter what he goes out to do in the yard, suddenly the neighbors will be doing the same. Call it the power of suggestion? |

My husband does Professional Lawn Maintenance (in addition to pastoring) and here is what he says:
Generally at 4 inches you cut the lawn down to 3 inches (do not cut more than one third the length of the grass) He also recommends NOT bagging your clippings. Reason being is that the clippings will be used as mulch for the lawn, the soil needs those nutrients. If you bag your clippings the soil will deplete those nutrients resulting in you having to fertilize and water more frequently.

My neighbor across the road mows every 4 days. It just makes me sick! She can go ahead and mow all she wants to. She has a really nice mower. I guess she just wants to show it off. And she mows the front road part of ours. How nice. I mow when I can. When it's not raining or if I have gas in the can. Or if I can get it started. That's when I mow.

We keep ours at 4 because we also have a finish mower pulled by the tractor which mows at that. Since we live in the country we don't have any rules telling us how to keep our yards so we don't mow as often. We really think it is more water conserving and better for the grass not mow as often and as short.

Every time I see the neighbor mowing her yard, I get out there and mow again. LOL. My dh says that's why the grass doesn't look plush. This neighbor and I have a competition going on. When I mow, she is out in her yard just looking at me. As soon as I finish, she is on her mower mowing her yard again. So, as soon as she's finished, I get on my mower again. ROFL. I guess I'll never get to cut at blade level 4. LOL. Thanks for listening.

I have to keep mine on 5 or 6 around here with all the rocks and uneven ground and roots. Plus the redneck mower deck is all whonky. Plus sometimes it might be weeks before I can get it to work at all and by then it's 3' tall.
