I need a solution to naturally get rid of weeds and grass that is flourishing between the brick pathway I have in my garden-
Also, anyone every try planting creeping thyme between the bricks? I need something that will fill in the spaces.

I have had sucess with orange vinegar I made because the smell of straight vinegar is strong. Also mint grows well in walkways and keeps coming back after a beating.

I wonder if the vinegar would work to kill some running bamboo. I'm thinking about cutting it down and then "pickling" the area where it is growing.
Any thoughts? |

I did a post about this on my blog this summer!
I used vinegar this summer with really good results, and also a vinegar/salt combination. I can't do boiling water because my garden isn't that close to the house, so I could get scalded.
You can spend $$$ on "horticultural vinegar", but you could make a cheaper version by diluting CLR with water, half CLR and half water. I would only use this if regular old straight white vinegar didn't work.

We started using vinegar this year too, and it worked really well. My husband dedicated a garden sprayer to use just with vinegar so we could have it on hand whenever we spotted something that needed spraying. He labeled it with a permanent marker "The Pickler".

I have some thyme from steppables as some other thymes. Both grow thick enough to cut down on weeds but the steppables is much shorter which is nicer around my path. The regular thyme gets pretty tall and would be difficult to walk on in my garden.

YEA! I forgot about those- they call them weed burners!
found in some gardenr's supply catalogs and such. pretty ok for getting rid of fire ants too, but you have to distrub the nest and keep digging as you burn. It's a 2 person job there! |

i want to try creeping thyme in the brick walk way. i am concerned about how much traffic it will take, we have two dogs that love to run. i remember my mother using boiling water to kill weeds when i was (much) younger.
Some dreams are worth the risk it takes to make them real.

I second the ideas of using a torch or vinegar and hot water. For groundcover ideas check out Steppables www.steppables.com They specialize in groundcovers that tolerate foot traffic. You can search for plants that fit your needs and will grow in your area.

You can use a torch to scorch the weeds. Might take a second pass a week or two later as sometimes the roots don't die. I do like creeping thyme if you have a full sun, dry location. |

I have found out purely accidentally that baking soda will kill grass/weeds or wherever it's put down.
You'll have to sweep it up of course after a few days to keep from tracking it into the house since it's on a walk path, but it will really do a number! |

My Grandmother used to use boiling water for killing everything from weeds to red ants. Worked pretty good.

My rose bushes found that out, Dawn. I am very careful now spraying the vinegar, and I don't spray it near the rose bushes.

I have used vinegar too and it worked just fine. Be careful where you spray it though, it doesn't discriminate between weed and plants!

Yeah, I use vinegar, too. I'd hesitate to use salt because doesn't that make the soil sterile? If you use that, you may not be able to grow creeping thyme or anything else there afterward. I'd try the vinegar or hot water, just to be safe. Let us know what you decide and how you make out, though, okay? Good luck! - Nini

I use vinegar also, but when I clean out my coffee pot with vinegar and the water is hot, I pour that in the cracks and I have not had any weeds come back at all. It kills them instantly.

I tried vinegar. Worked really good. The vinegar smell was powerful for a day or two.
I've tried the salt, but it just didn't do that well.

I use salt, vinegar or boiling water. Depends on my mood and what's handy. It all works.

My grandpa pours boiling water in the cracks of his walk. He says it's only needed about once a month.

We have a patio that is made of bricks and we put salt in between the bricks and that took care of the weeds all summer long.
