My Sweetie (dh) and I are growing carrots for the firts time in our garden. This evening, dh asks how are we going to know when to pull the carrots up. So, we pulled one up, and it was super thin, I ate it and it was good. Tasted just like a carrot.
So, I ask, when does one know when to harvest carrots?

How interesting Kris. I just didn't know they called the saved seeds, Heirloom seeds. My Sweet husband saves many of the flower seeds and plants them again the next year. So, I guess we've been planting heirloom seeds. How cool is that! Thanks for taking your time to explain. You are a sweetie.

Marly, they are OLD carrot vareities. They were just seeds that are able to be saved and replanted to make more instead of buying more seeds. Anything that is heirloom is a true older plant that you can save seeds from each year. Some seeds have been saved for generations and passed down through families. So the seeds are very precious. I have some seeds of different veggies that are really old. Not the seed itself but seeds saved from certain plants to plant again the next year.
Ok, I hope this makes sense. I tend to ramble. But hybrid seeds are not true to the particular plant. Like hybrid peppers are made using a few other peppers and getting one pepper. If you take a seed from that new pepper and plant it you will not get another pepper like that one. If you take an heirloom plant and save seeds from it and plant again the next year you will get exactly what you had the year before.
Really hope it makes sense now.

I have no idea what kind of carrots we planted. We bought the seeds in a pack. Sorry. What is heirloom carrots? I love fresh carrots too.

Marly, I planted 3 different kinds of heorloom carrots in a raised bed. And they are full of weeds now. I wanted to wait til the carrots got bigger to weed so I wouldn't pull them up. But it's just full so I need to do something soon. I love fresh carrots right out of the garden. What kind did ya'll plant?

you can take little scissors and cut the seedlings off at the soil level if he is worred that pulling will disturb the others too much.

Thank you, thank you all. The carrots DO INDEED need to be spaced, but my sweetie (dh) will not thin them. He doesn't want to upset the carrots. Okay, well... we will just have bunches of baby carrots. I hope.

As long as they are spaced 2-3 inches apart I usually give them 2 months after they first sprout. Well, I give most of them 2 months. I tend to start pullin some up to nibble on after about a month or so. I am very impatient! LOL!

I pull the carrots to thin once they are starting to be about as thick around as my little finger and usually harvest when they are still young. I love the sweet young flavor!

It depends on if you want baby carrots or mature carrots. Baby carrots don't have to be thinned as much as mature carrots. Mature carrots will thicken at the top and push out of the soil a little way when they are done growing.

hi marly the seed pkt should tell you how many days to maturity. also when the shoulder of the carrot pushing up and out of the soil. you will be able to put a finger next to it in the soil. you can feel how fat they are on top. they must be thinned, if not they will not thicken and mature. same for beets. happy days sherrye
