hi fellow gardeners!
when is the right time to separate iris rhizomes? is it ok to do it now in the spring or is this strictly a fall activity? i live in the pacific nw.

We do ours after they are finished blooming. Most growers do them in late July or early August, but my mom(who has the prettiest flowers ever)does hers earlier. She thinks it gives them a better start before winter.

Ideally you wait, but I've had fine luck with doing in in late spring, but I agree with
Sherry that they should be trimmed back and may not folower the first year.

teresa is right. but i have divided late and they do great. trim the tops to 3 inches and replant.might not bloom first year. they will live. feed vit. b complex happy days sherrye

if they are already sending out new leaves or the flower stalks, its too late.
