And it was easy!! We have had a leaky outside faucet since we moved into this house. I asked and asked out landlord to fix it. His solution? Just turning the water off to that faucet! That was fine during the winter but not so helpful this spring when I need my hose.

So I watched a Bob Villa video on how to repair the faucet and took the faucet apart. One washer was completly gone and the other washer was super corroded.

I had to vist 3 hardware stores before I found one that had the right kind of washers! Sheesh! Then one of the washers turned out to be too thick so I trimmed it with scissors and got it all put back together. I turned on the water main and... no leaks!!

I feel awesome! I can't wait to show my husband. He thought I should just leave it for the landlord! LOL

Take a deep breath!!! You can be very proud of your accomplishment!! I tend to tackle things and am not always successful but I feel better because at least I tried. I just put the head back on a hammer. It kept falling off and I needed to use it for a craft project. Duct tape holds it on very well. My brother saw it, laughed and said "You know that there is a better way to fix that, don't you?" Well, yes, there probably is, but my idea worked just fine and got the job done!! He will end up fixing it the "right" way for me but it just goes to show, where there is a will there is a way!! Way to go Girlfriend!!

We have the same problem, and DH just hasn't gotten to it - last year I didn't have much of a garden because of it. I'm going to follow your example. After listening to me whine about my DH (who really is a dear) drag his feet on LOTS of stuff, my dad sent me a book called, "Okay, I'll Do It Myself! Or a handywoman's primer that takes the mystique out of home repairs," by Barbara A. Curry, copyright 1971. It's hysterical. The cover illustration includes a heavy-duty stapler, a measuring tape, a paint scraper, lipstick, mascara and bobby pins! It does have a lot of useful information, though, even if it is a little dated.

Oh my gosh I am so mad at my husband. I told him that I fixed the faucet and how easy it was and he said "Yeah you just take it apart and replace the washers" So I said "You knew how to fix it and you didn't?" and he said "Yes, I wanted the landlords to do it." Way to throw money away Doug! I bet we have spent about $100 extra in water bills because of that darn leak! GRR!

But atleast I fixed it! ;)

Congratulations, you've gotten two things out of this experience; a working faucet and a dose of self-confidence. So many things just take the will to do it, a small amount of materials and a little time.
It would be fun to have a thread of how we have fixed something ourselves. I'd add the time the horn on our van got stuck blasting and I fixed it with a hairpin.

Kristin- you should!! It was SO easy! I laugh at how many times I thought to myself "Well I guess I will wait for the Landlord to do it" or "Maybe next time Dad is up I can get him to help".

It's funny. More and more things are like that. I fixed our dryer after having dad help me test it the first time (me and electricity don't mix well). Now the faucet.

Bring on the handywoman status! LOL
