What can the farm bureau do for me? Besides test my soil? I'm heading over there to purchase a soil testing kit. ($25.00) I was going to ask about membership when I get there. I don't know the cost, but I wonder if it could benefit someone like us - urban farmers. The farm bureau is in our area (urban) so I would think it could.
Just wondering what exactly they do. Humor the CityChick who basically knows nothing about the farm bureau.

I went down. They are affiliated with the county extension office - which they share an office with. I think it's a super secret extension office because it's not listed on the Illinois Ext. website! I didn't know we had one so close to home.
They offer quite an array of services. I think we're going be become members. We won't need the insurance benefits that they offer, but the other things sound great! They're having a farming on your balcony class coming up, I don't have a balcony, but the topics cover: soils in my county, soils for containers & raised beds. Seed & plant selection, fertilization and organics & more.
They send a nice little paper monthly and a magazine seasonally. The woman gave me back copies of the magazine and a current copy of the paper.
I'm so excited!

Should I be contacting the Extension office instead? Someone told us to go to the Farm Bureau.

Well...I think what you're referring to in our state is called "Extension Service". Each county has their own, and we also have a state and county "farm bureau" which is where I have all our insurance. Our extension service offers soil testing, homemaking services, master gardener classes and countless other amazing activities (all for little to no cost). They also are the primary support of the 4H club.

The PA farm bureau is mostly set up for rural farmers. The memebership gives you a newsletter and they have seminars on dairy production etc, help put on our state farm show, etc. They do have small groups for women and kids. They mostly keep the farmer posted on what is going on in government and how that effects the farmer. Our farm bureau has lanched a campaign against the Humane Society because the humane society is calling for an end to puppy mills and inhumane animal confinement. This is why I would never join. PA has some real backwards thinking. How could you fight on the side of puppy mills and gestation crates? Keep in mind our farm show is mostly sponsered by Monsanto owned companies. The more chemicals you use the better. I get so frustrated trying to farm in this state sometimes I Just want to give up.
