Planted some garlic back in October, Columbus Day in fact. They are coming up and are about 4" tall. Never planted garlic before, so I am not quite sure what to expect. How do I know when they are done growing? Do they get flowers?
Oh, and what about the braiding...I'd like to try my hand at that too..since I am a Farmgirl in training... |

My garlic is about 5 inches tall right now-no real "leaves", yet, just the shoot looking things. I'm hoping they're growing alright, as I've never grown garlic before!
Starbucks and sushi to green fried tomatoes and corn pudding-I wouldn't change it for the world.

Thanks Chris, I had no idea about the scapes or the leaf/paper....how do you prepare the scapes...? |

Faith, when you see the seed-heads forming (called scapes, which are very good to eat), break them off, don't let the plant go to seed. You want the effort of the plant to go to forming the bulbs, not in producing seeds. Each leaf above ground represents a paper around the garlic bulb, and for every leaf that dies, one paper around the bulb rots away.....soooo, when one or two leaves die, then you know its time to dig 'em up. I let them dry in bunches of like 10, I hang them in the rafters of the barn for a week or two, or until all the leaves are dry. |

Faith, yes I braid mine and it hangs from the ceiling in my root cellar, its cool and dry in there, so it keeps real well.
Amy, I would think its to late to plant garlic now, at least it is in my neck of the woods, i plant in Fall, but maybe some of the Girls who live in your area would know better.

Can I plant garlic now? Would I be able to harvest anything this year OR if I plant now should I just let it go until next year? If I wait 'til fall to plant I probably won't do it because the start of the school year and harvest time are SO busy I rarely plant any fall stuff.
Prayer costs nothing, but is worth the most. |

Thank you for the help w/the garlic. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge..I am excited that they are popping up. Where did you find information regarding the braiding...Do you braid yours? |

When the tops start falling over, quit watering them and in 3-5 days they should be ready to pull, then before the tops dry out completly, you can start braiding them together to finish drying.
