Posted - Mar 17 2010 : 04:30:44 AM Today marks the official start to my gardening season! It is traditional for me to plant the first peas on St. Patrick's Day, no matter the weather. My dad did it, his dad did it, my great aunts, etc. Some years there is still snow on the ground, some years it is pouring rain and muddy as can be. Last year, I was sure all the seeds died because we had such a yucky spring that the seeds took double time to come up. Today is absolutely gorgeous! Sunny, will be close to 60. Yesterday was so nice, I was able to prepare a couple of 4'x4' plots for them. Dug them out by hand, raked them, and by sunset, the soil was the perfect consistency if a little cold... There's a lot of work to be done, before I can plant anything else, but I'm so excited to start my peas! Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone!

Posted - Mar 17 2010 : 12:49:13 PM I've never done peas before, but I got them because it's a memory I have of being in my grandmother's garden. I read that I'm supposed to coat them in something called pea innoculant before planting. Does anyone know if this is a must. Is it organic? I looked at the store where I get my seeds and starting kits and such, but I didn't see anything called bean and pea innoculant. Someone enlighten me :)

Posted - Mar 17 2010 : 09:38:19 AM That sounds like an awesome tradition! Mind if my family borrows it too? We will get outside to plant our peas now.
