I am inheriting my mom's rhubarb and someone gave me some to start. Okay... Help! I figure it needs sun - what type of soil is best? Can I put it as part of my herb garden? Can I transplant my mom's rhubarb even if it's just coming up? I love rhubarb and really want to make sure I do everything right!

Thanks gals.

Farmgirls...
where I live mail order companies cannot or will not mail Rhubarb to us,,,so, I called a lady that I knew that has a whole field of Rhubarb and asked her if I could dig some..she was more then happy to share....sooooooooooooooo, when the snow is gone(still 1 foot there), then she said to come and dig all I want...
Maybe, just maybe I can share some through the mail to some if they want it....(If I can remember that is....)

Rene' I can't seem to find anything about planting rhubarb and strawberries together.
I know I deep mulch my rhubarb with straw(they are heavy feeders, in fact my new rhubarb, I planted by my compost pile), they thrive with the mulch and the mulch helps to hold the heavy leaves up.

This was my rhubarb last year, and from the looks of the sprouts coming up this year it will probably be twice this size. I had 4 harvests off of it last year.

Katie, thanks for the U of I link. It has inspired me to give it one last shot. I'm going to the gardening center tomorrow and I will try it one last time! I do bury all of my kitchen compost scraps in various beds outside. Anything to deal with that IL clay!

Good luck on trying it again Melissa!

I have never had problem growing the stuff... but I recently bought 2 more bulbs and thought I would plant it over in the garden.. So of course I started wondering what can it be planted next too.. So I put it next to the strawberries we will see if they like each other in dirt as well as they do in a pie dish!

I LOVE rhubarb- preserves, pie, crisp, juice-just Love it. I bought some seeds on line and planned on planting them in HUGE containers with afternoon shade but have been told that in zone 9, I may have to grow it as an anual. Not sure how well that will work out since you don't harvest the first year. If anyone has experience in zone 9 it would be great to hear from them. I was told to water it with ice water if we have an extra warm winter. Someone mentioned that they heard you were supposed to twist them off instead of cutting them to harvest... Reminds me of my Aunt Ethel, twisting them off. I would get so excited because I knew what was coming...PIE!!! She made the best.

Dawn maybe it's Il. soil.lol....glad I'm not the only one...I tried growing it a few years back and it look like it had a weird fungus so I got rid of it. I might attempt it again.

Three years ago my uncle dug me up enough rhubarb for six plants. I just dug them up and moved them the other day. I planted 12 plants at my house and another 18 at my moms! The original rhubarb was my grandma's at the farm. My mom remembers digging up and transplanting this same rhubarb when she was 14. So my rhubarb is kind of an heirloom!

Hi Dawn --
Here's a link to the U of Ill extension info on growing rhubarb in our fair state: http://urbanext.illinois.edu/veggies/rhubarb1.html

I received a pass-along plant from a friend's garden some years ago and have no difficulty whatsoever with growing the rhubarb. It is in a raised bed and I do water it during dry spells. I think it is key to have a well-drained soil, and sometimes our soils are bit heavy here.

I put composted horse manure on it a couple of years ago, and I do dig little holes near it and bury banana peels, egg shells, and other organic green materials so that the earthworms will have something to munch on.

Hope you try again -- be sure it has plenty of sun.

I love rhubarb, too!

I seem to be rhubarb challenged. I can't get it to grow, whether it is from a store bought root or a chunk of it from Windy Pines Farm. It just won't grow. Any ideas on what I could do to get one started? I love rhubarb and it is a bit expensive in the grocery stores.

I am so excited my Rhubarb is coming up early! Last year I had three good harvest from one plant. I plan on trying MJ's Rhubarb cake recipe in the latest issue and the Rhubarb & Apricot preserve (or is it Jam) recipe from her ideabook :)

I have been told to wait 3 years from the time of planting before dividing the plants. Has anyone done this?

Hey,
Quick question. Do Rhubarb plants and starwberry plants like each other? can they be grown next to each other. I know they are GREAT together in Pies... but how about in the garden?

Thanks for the tip.

OOOH....I made Rhubarb Crisp last night too. It was so good! My mom has the best rhubarb ever and swears that what it likes is a big shovel full of cow manure every fall and that's all. Of course maybe that was the secret of why it grew so well around that outhouse a few posts back =~)

Just made a wonderful apple/rhubarb crisp. Here is the recipe if any of you are interested -

Apple-Rhubarb Crisp

1 1/2 pounds Granny Smith apples
1 pound rhubarb, rinsed
1 orange (about 1/2 lb.)
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
2 teaspoons minced fresh ginger
About 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup pecans
1/2 cup granulated sugar
6 tablespoons (3/8 lb.) butter or margarine, in chunks
1 cup whipping cream
1 tablespoon powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla

1. Peel and core apples. Cut into 1-inch chunks.
2. Trim and discard coarse ends and any bruised spots from rhubarb. Cut rhubarb into 1-inch pieces.
3. Grate 1 tablespoon peel from orange. Cut orange in half and ream 1/4 cup juice.
4. In a shallow 3-quart (9- by 13-in.) casserole, combine apples, rhubarb, orange peel, orange juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and 2 tablespoons flour. Mix well.
5. In a food processor, combine 3/4 cup flour, pecans, and granulated sugar; whirl until nuts are finely ground. Or mince nuts with a knife and mix with flour and sugar in bowl. Add butter and whirl or rub mixture with your fingers until it forms fine crumbs. Squeeze crumbs into lumps and scatter over apple-rhubarb mixture.
6. Bake in a 375° oven until topping is well browned and juice bubbles at edges, about 40 minutes (35 minutes in a convection oven).
7. Meanwhile, in a chilled bowl with a mixer on high speed, whip cream until it holds soft peaks; add powdered sugar and vanilla. Serve, or cover and chill up to 4 hours; whisk before serving.
8. Let crisp cool 10 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature. Spoon into bowls; top with whipped cream.

Yield: Makes 8 to 10 servings

Rhubarb always makes me think of the show on NPR "Prairie Home Companion"....Be-bop a re-bop a rhubarb pie....

I just got some from my MIL, and it started to rot because she left it in a plastic bag too long before she brought it up here....well, we threw it in the woods....just threw it....i didn't want it being rotten and contaminating my garden....well it rooted itself and is doing famously! You can't kill it. I swear.

Yesterday I was working in the alley and an older couple came down it on thier bicycles. I asked if they were" alley touring" and they said they were looking for an abandoned rhubarb plant. I thought they just wanted to see what a huge one looked like and said they could go in the yard and look at mine. They really only wanted some to make a pie! They were seasonal workers from Florida(originally from N.D.), and missed rhubarb! I gave them some stalks and promised to dig up a little plant to put in a pot for them to have outside their motorhome.Hope they can harvest from it before fall! P.S.,I found 3 great planting containers at the scrap metal dump!!

When I bought my house in Nicholville New York, I inherited a fairly large patch of rhubarb. I made a pie yesterday and one is in the oven as we speak. It was soooo good!!! Rhubarb is a very good thing!!!

Has anyone grown rhubarb in the south? In the site www.rhubarbinfo.com/rhubarb-growing.html, I read that rhubarb wilts when temps. are in the 90's, so plant in some shade. This is our 3rd year with trying, the plants look happy (in afternoon shade in flower border), and I'm hoping... Thanks for the yummy recipes, everybody!
