....is your oldest house plant? I have a croton that will soon be seeing its 14th. year with me. It's such a good plant--always tells me when it needs water, never acts fussy--it's like an old friend. What special plants of yours have attained friendship status?

I have a Christmas cactus that I inherited about 1992 from my ex's grandmother. It was a full, flowing plant that provided multiple blooms 2x a year. I had it in the car when we moved during the winter. A below 0 night put it through a test. It lost so much. I thought I had lost it all together. It went back to its stalk and to months to shoot new branches. It is still recovering I think. It's been years. I haven't seen a bloom since the move.But it's alive. Yeah

We have a christmas cactus that was my great grandmothers (1930's), then it lived at Ma & Dad's and when Ma died, I got her. I need to re-pot her but I've been putting it off. Dh is an indoor plant nut, he has a jade that is 15ish and looks like a tree, a bunch of hoyas that are 30 ish years old, and a really cool mother-in-laws tongue.

I have a Snakeplant that belonged to my Great-Grandmother.I don't know if it bloomed for her, but Mom said it never did bloom for her. It bloomed for me twice since I've had it, the last time being 2006. I think I got it from Mom in the late 80's.It has the most interesting tiny, waxy flowers when it blooms and they drip constantly. Quite interesting.

I have a beautiful pink orchid cactus (Epiphyllum) plant that once belonged to my great grandmother. She passed away in 1956, but we have photos of that date back to the 1940's - 70 years now - and it was a large plant then. After she passed away, my great aunt and uncle cared for it until 1996. I found it lying neglected several years later (the couple who rented the house didn't want it and tossed it out in the yard, where miraculously it survived a few harsh winters) and nursed it back to health. My efforts are now rewarded every April-May with hundreds of blooms.

I have several African Violets that has been passed down from my Grandmother. The origional plant is long gone but my sister and I have several offspring. We (grandma, Mamma, my sis and I) have kept this thing going for probably 60 years. Grandma always had a window full of them, for as long as I can remember. She died in the late 1950's.
I have a plant (never can remember it's name) from my Daddy's funeral, (1991) and one from Mamma's (1998).

Let's see, I have an umbrella plant that is that is 35 years old. I have a snake plant that is a good 25. I have a christmas cactus that is at least 30. The snake plant and cactus are from when we had our greenhouses and grew houseplants and the umbrella plant was a housewarming gift .

Tina - I tossed out two yesterday but kept the others hoping and feeling that you are right and they will come back when warm weather returns. They look pretty sorry right now! :)

Wow, Joanna, that's amazing about your Christmas cactus! My neighbot just gave me a Christmas cactus this past Christmas. I also have some spider plants that I've had for a number of years, can't remember when I got the original. It's interesting that some of you have had your houseplants longer than you've had you've had your DH.

don't toss your christmas cactus out just yet Shirley Jean..you may have gotten lucky and there just might still be growth down in the roots of the plant.

That is so cool!
I have a pothos that belonged to DH's late wife that was almost dead when we got together. I was able to root a couple of leaves and the durn thing is now taking over the kitchen!! It is probably about 30 years old.

I have a christmas cactus that I started when I was 10, it is now 40 years old. It is a piece off of my Grandmother's christmas cactus, which her's was started from a piece from her grandmothers.

I have a shamrock that is 17 years old. She is not looking her best lately. I hope she bounces back though. I've had her longer than I've had DH ;)

I have a devil's ivy that is 16 and has grown into 6 different pots. I also have an aloe vera that is 14.

I have two oxblood begonias that are 33 years old. We had a whole porch full when we got married, and two pots remain. It is about time for me to start a new one by rooting in water. I never see these at the nursery anymore.
I also have a back porch full of Christmas cacti that are over 10 years old. But I think the cold weather has gotten them this year at last. May be time for new ones.

I have a Rabbit's Foot fern that's probably about 5 1/2 years old and a shamrock that's about the same. I just moved the fern to a bigger pot.

I have a aloe vera plant that my son planted in school when he was in 1st grade. He is now almost 25yrs old. So I guess it would be 20yrs old.

I have a large jade plant that is about 7 years old. It usually stays outdoors, but I brought it inside when temps dipped to freezing. Love that plant and would hate to lose it.
