Posted - Feb 07 2010 : 12:36:18 PM I bought two rose plants on a whim (never grown roses before) and now I need to get them planted. Any tips from rose growers?

Posted - Feb 09 2010 : 8:47:38 PM Hey Kimberly~~everyones advice is great and right on the mark, they also like alfalfa meal. Make sure they get plenty of water the first year. I used to be and "Enumclaw girl", I think we had close to 40 roses in our yard and the best advice I can give you on pruning is: in the fall prune to your knees, in the spring after all signs of frost are gone, cut back to your ankles. In the fall just cut back the stems that cross or are growing the wrong way. Of course I wouldn't cut them back this spring unless they are unruly looking. If you want to use a commercial fert. I used to use a product put out by Bayer, it was just for roses and it worked better than anything, we had huge blossoms and beautiful dark green foliage. Think you can buy it at Lowes/Home Depot. You should try a "Knockout" rose, they are pretty carefree, grow quickly and are beautiful!!!

Posted - Feb 09 2010 : 6:36:42 PM I hear that roses love horse manure, Something about the acidity or something. It is what my Dad use to use and he grew the most fragrant roses. You could smell them from across the street. The were big and beautiful.

Posted - Feb 08 2010 : 4:15:43 PM Teresa: I've already planted five roses bushes last spring, is it too late or can I put the cup of epson salt around the rose bush? Sounds like a good idea. Marly
