My mom gave me my grandmother's terrarium. It has been dead for a long time so I cleaned out the soil and the ornaments that she had used. Now in the next couple weeks I am going to buy the necessary items to restart it. Does anyone have things they have really enjoyed with their terreriums? I am thinking of setting it up like a jungle farie room with minuture furniture and such like was in MaryJane's magazine last year

Terraniums are coming back! I ran into a box of old Pepsi Syrup bottles (gallon size) that would make awesome terraniums! As a matter of fact, either last months edition of Country Home or a specialty garden magazine had a complete layout on how terraniums are coming back and how to make one. They are really easy to do.
Good soil, tropical type plants:
nerve plant
miniature ivy
variegated ivy
Bird Nest Sansevieria
Irish moss
Maidenhair fern
Podocarpus
Podocarpus macrophylla - Slow growing mini-tree
Prayer plant
Baby tears

Here's a tip I learned: if you have a narrow neck glass jar, take a twig or a wood skewer and tape it tightly to a baby or a grapefruit spoon for a perfect fitting spade!

Post pictures when you both make your terrariums again. Now you've got me thinking about doing it too.

I sure will! I am going to get it set up next paycheck- I think the trick is getting plants that like a more tropical type environment.

Alee I did one last year....I actually posted asking about it too on the forum ...only had a few people replied ...I guess no one is into it. But I made about four of them and the only one left still alive is the one I made for my mom. It's funny you asked because I was just thinking the other day since I have all the materials minus the plants to make them up again. I even used a large mason jar for the one in the kitchen. Trying to find the right plants was my issue. I found some nice jars for them at Michaels. Let us know how you do!!

Thanks Dawn! I saw a neat site where a lady planted one in a stainless steel dog dish and then the "lid" was an unside down aquarium! It looked really neat! The dog dish ended up looking like a stand and the aquarium gave that seamless look on the outside. I thought that was clever! I wouldn't have ever thought of that!

I had a terrarium when I was a teenager. I loved it! They are so much fun to set up and decorate with. They were very big in the 70's. Have fun with yours.
