Oh good grief.....the deer are creating havoc with my fruit trees...this morning's latest damage is several branches broken off and the bark rubbed off. uuggh!
Last week they broke the stakes supporting another of my trees and prior to that they have eaten the branches down...I have even wrapped deer gard wire around the trees to keep the deer away...HA!
The little buggers are determinded to dessamate my little orchard...
But at least with this rain they haven't been out in the orchard.

I would LOVE to see a pic of the "kool-aid" horse! Something we just get used to this time of year...wrapping ourselves and critters in orange when venturing out :) Our general season doesn't start until this coming Sunday, but then it lasts until the Sunday after Thanksgiving...looking forward to some venison jerky!

Grace, sounds like you should be having better luck soon. I'm no help at all. Went hunting this weekend and decided that we are "blessed" with magic deer. I couldn't hit a single one. Might as well have been wearing lavendar and CD's and throwing marshmellows at them. Oh well, freezer is full of veggies anyway. :)
On the flip side, my orange Kool-aid spotted horse also didn't get shot. Hunters behaved this year and stayed away from the areas around the horse pasture. Poor Q does not like his new "style". He looked so embarrassed. But better that than wounded.

It sounds like this is going to be a great deer season! They're all over and need to be thinned out. I hope I will have room in my freezer for one.

hahah! ok, so I am thinking I might have to check into "Liquid fence",,, I had to wrap yet another apple tree that the deer got to...Oh and I have a 6' wire fence around my garden,,,,I forgot to latch the gate the other day and it must have blown open from the winds, anyhow, yet, had a bunch of little hoove prints in there and they polished off my broccoli and sunflowers.....so today was clean out the garden day.
We have both White tale & Mule deer around us.
Oh & i did the CD/DVD's,,,hung them up off the trees...as well as bought 6 of those silly scarecrows (from Joanns fabric & craft store)...the deer just laugh & continue to graze....
Oh sigh...I guess I can only hope my fruit trees survive and grow fat & strong.....at least the deer are not fond of my lavender! lol! Hmmmm, maybe I should plant lavender plants around my fruit trees! hahah!

Kelly, fight the open season on the wolves, cause when they are all gone due to the ridiculous slaughter, the deer, elk etc will get alot worse.

Deer, BAD BAD BAD, my Mom in Missouri had lots of problems with them til last year. I so an artical about taking old CDs and DVDs, gluing the label sides together, so the prizim sides are out. Hanging them from the trees , fences or what ever, and the deer won't go near them, its worked for 2 yrs now. Good luck!!!

We call them cloven-hooved rat bast@&*s! around here. I say the veggies get into the freezer one way or another...so thanks for offering to share, Grace, but you can keep 'em! LOL

And we are out in the country, so I completely agree about not encouraging them if you are too urban. We've been watching a healthy doe and her twins for months and enjoying it. It's all a trade off. I think next time I plan an orchard, I'm going to have to start it in a deer-fenced area. It is just part of the joy of living where we do. :)

Hmmm...any with antlers? Sorry, no advice here. They ate up my new orchard last year and I gave up. This year we're feeding them old hay and apple mush left from pressing for cider. And harvesting one or two if we get lucky this weekend.

Don't encourage them to stick around! Part of the issue here in California is that migrant deer populations have become resident deer populations, which is not healthy for them or good for those of us trying to make a living off the land. Plus, feeding them is not legal in some states.
If you can't fence them out, try a product called Liquid Fence. It is a spray that smells horrible at first, but fades away for us, but not for the deer. I have good luck with it if I remember to reapply more often than the packaging suggests. (and we have about 40 deer that live on our property)

You could try buying a couple bales of hay and putting those in a "safe" part of your lawn with a salt block (In a orse grain dish so it doesn't kill the ground) to give them something to eat other than your poor orchard! But I don't know if you want to encourage them?

No, we have a bunch here too, lol. Though since we have moved back home to farm land we really haven't (knock wood) had any problems with them. When we were in the suburbs they were a nightmare - city deer are a different breed! We used Liquid Fence then and it worked like a charm. Good luck

They cant get in the fenced garden though.they just walk through our yard like they own it. lol
