Just curious to see if anyone else will be picking up black walnuts this year. In my part of the country, you can pick up all your black walnuts and cash them in for money. The various farm stores will generally be set up to receive and pay you for the walnuts you bring in. We have A LOT of Black Walnut trees around our place, and I have been saving dog food bags all year specifically for walnut collection purposes.
I suppose I could save them, cure them and extract the walnuts myself, but I HATE the taste of black walnuts so cashing them in works better for me.

Well, bad news on the Black Walnut front. The place we usually get walnuts hulled, their huller broke down and they decided not to get it fixed. :( However, the price of walnuts dropped to $6 per ct (hulled). So it wasn't really worth it. I think I will dry some for my MIL and call it good. Maybe I'll just round up a bunch and put them in the barn. Then, if the price goes up next year, I'll already have some. LOL!!
We had a bumper crop of black walnuts this year, plus, with the economy being so tight there were a lot more people picking up walnuts this year as well. Drat!! Last year they started at almost $15 per ct!

eta- Yes, the nutshell is under the goop and the green outer husk
We would get the green off by running them over in the driveway - then pick them out of the husk (green, maybe turning black) through the staining goop and let them dry on cardboard or cement that you don't mind stained. After they were dry they would go into an apple box or bucket (at Ma & Dad's) or an onion bag (at Gram's) and set in the garage until needed.

My neighbor and I both have black walnut trees. I would like to know when you dry these nuts how the nuts dry. They are green and have plack under that. I am just wondering if the green comes off then the black and then what? Is it the nut shell?

I never heard of getting $ for collecting black walnuts. We have tons of them here in IL. I like black walnuts, but they are too much work to dry and crack open. Good luck selling yours!

Just so you know, Mom, Dad is planning on burning them. So you may have to hide them. LOL!!

We have had record amounts of rain and record amounts of black walnuts this year. We have a couple of small trees that have dropped what seems like tons of walnuts. And another one on the back side of our growing property, over the fence, which has dropped an awful lot on our salad greens too. When those nuts hit our metal shed it sounds like a gun going off. I guess I will have to pick them up in order to remove them, cause they sure are hard to walk on. I will bag them up in chicken feed bags, and see how many I end up with. I need to be rid of them.

When we would collect them (as a girl) they would get a special place in the driveway to get run over for a few weeks (the juice will stain something awful), then witht rubber gloves we'd peel the outer, then into 1/2 full 5 gallon buckets to dry in the garage. We would then crack as needed throughout the winter. Thanks for the reminder, I know my brother's place has a few, I'm going to poach some from him today..and I know he'll never do it.

Since you live in Indiana, you probably have a black walnut tree. To harvest them, just pick up the ones that don't show any damage. Leave the damaged ones for the squirrels. You have to lay them out and dry them in a cool (not damp) place where the squirrels can't break in and get to them. Don't know how long it'll take for them to dry out--it varies depending on temp, moisture, etc. My dad dries them in a backyard shed and sometimes it takes months. It's important that they dry thoroughly. I think there is probably some good info on the web if you search. happy harvesting!

Just wondering... I have a walnut tree in my yard. Not sure if it is a black walnut tree or not, but how do you harvest the nuts? Do you have to dry them out? How do you know when they are safe to eat?

I've thought of doing that...but that's as far as it goes. We have a gorgeous black walnut tree in our yard, but I just can't seem to get myself the time to gather and take them somewhere.

Sadly, we don't have black walnuts around here that I know of - my grandparents lived in Missouri though, and had a huge tree in their yard. I just love black walnuts, but buying them in the store is far too pricey. My cousin gave me several coffee cans full that I kept in the freezer till I used them up. They are so good in pumpkin bread and banana bread. |
