This year i am planning on having a larger garden than I previously have had, and i am wondering if i should put up a fence to keep pesky animals out of there. Does anyone have a unique fence around their garden or a good idea for one, or even one that has worked well against animals? Id like to recycle something old, i had an idea to use old bed metal headboards and footboards, but im not sure where i will find that many!

Oh, Fences, I love fences around gardens, in one of the latest Better Homes and Gardens Mags they had this rustic fence made out of tree trunk posts and limbs for the planks, very cute and the arbor was made out of tree limbs also. I want that around my garden but my voice of reason (DH) thinks its impractical for the spring plowing of the garden. So, I am going to try to figure out a way to make the fence in panels that can be moved.

Would love to here what fencing you decide on!

We have wild hogs (and a tame one ) to keep out so we use electric fence around our veggie garden. I have plastic poles that have a stake on the bottom and clips for the wire. I run 4 strands around it. Its nice because at the end of the season I can take it down and the size, location and shape is easily changed. From a distance its also pretty much invisable so thebeauty of the garden shows through.

Laura, maybe your peonies will return. Our yard used to have peony bushes lining the front and back walkways. Dad hated to mow around anything. So, as soon as they quit blooming, he would mow them right down. They would reappear every year. Magic!

I would love to have some fencing, also! I live in a subdivision and used to have a corn field behind my house which has been recently replaced with another subdivision. Boy do I miss that field! I would like to have a small picket fence around the garden and maybe along the back lot line, to add cuteness and also establish some sort of border since our new neighbors cut down our peonies last year by accident! Did I say I missed the corn field? We can't afford a large fence around the whole yard now, so just something small that I can *attempt* to put up myself. I'm also not a big fan of plastic stuff, especially the stuff that's supposed to look like wood or stone. I'd much rather have the real thing! Don't really have any animals to keep out, at least not wild ones. Just neighborhood cats and dogs, oh and neighbors. Did I mention that they cut down our flowers? And they took down the fence posts from the old wire fence - the last reminder that this used to be farmland and country and I think I'll stop my rambling now!

Much love,
Laura

Sherry - Your place sounds wonderful! Can you share photos? I would love to see your fences and especially your greenhouse - I have been toying with the idea of doing a greenhouse out of old windows myself!

For our garden fencing, I am using an old privacy fence cut in half and putting chicken wire on the inside - the fencing was on the property went we bought it so we got lucky.

Leah - cute idea with the metal beds. I have also seen metal headboards used to grow vining veggies and fruits. Good luck and let us know what you end up doing.

I have my flowers growing all around the yard but veggies that are not in containers this will have a small white picket fence around them. I just love the way it looks.

I have had to put up a fence around my garden and strawberry bed this year because my free range chickens are such good tractors that they till up everything roots and all. No money so went to cenex and picked up all the free hardwood pallets they would let us have. Looks funny but it is free floating. I put them together with lag screws 3 per section and they hold themselves up. They are 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide. I put them up so they are 4 feet tall but have found that the chickens still can get over them so I am adding a 2 foot section to the top with just scrap pieces of 1 by 2 and some bird netting to keep them out. I think the fence will work for the deer but not for the raccoons that are great climbers. I know they look not so nice as a purchased fence but I live in the woods and nobody sees them but me and my friends so I don't think they will bother anybody.

We have several different fences around our place and all have been done on a shoe-string budget. In our very front yard (Around my Iris) we have an old snow fence painted white. In the front yard around our house we have a picket fence (Painted white) that is made from an old privacy fence. Right outside our back door and near our pool we have an old privacy fence that was picked up for $50. Then, around our herb gardens and our greenhouse (Made out of old windows) we have a split rail fence. This fence was picked up at an auction and I think Keith paid $30 for it. I love the way they all blend together and we get lots of compliments on them. Hugs, Sher

WE have so many deer around my houst that they jump over anything short enough to be cute.My husband even said it might not be worth putting one in.So I asked him if an electric fence would keep them out.He siad if it was high enough it would work.So We had 3 wire strands that ran around the whole thing.Didn't look cute but worked like a charm.

I was looking at a Better Homes and Garden magazine last night at the store.I think it was the Beds & Borders addition. It had a picture of the cutest fence. It was made out of small tree trunks.I wish I could have something like that.

We use regular steel fence posts and net fencing - not original, but darn effective! I think the headboards/footboards would be SO cute, too. I wonder if you could alternate them with something else if you can't find enough. What types of animals may need to be kept out?

I have always had a fence around my garden...but this year will be going to raised beds (Mona the cow has my big old fenced garden area that I have used the past three summers) and I am not sure what to do yet either. I hate the idea of no fence, but I have a feeling it will be that way at least for this next summer. I LOVE the idea of the metal headboards and footboards if you can find enough..that would be adorable!! Old rusty metal gates attached together would be cool too. I have access to as many pallets as I want and use them for alot of things..but my garden this year will be really really visible so I think I will have it be more open...at least give it a try.
Good luck...if you do the headboard/footboard fence I sure want to see a picture!!

What about recycling beat up wooden palets? Most lumber companies will give them away once a board or two has been broken but there is still lumber in them that can be used.
